Course abstract

The course builds up an in-depth understanding of the substance and methodology of business planning, the systematisation of plans, including setting targets for all the levels of business planning, the creation of systemic plans and as well as how to assess the effectiveness of the plans.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Students will be able to: demonstrate the knowledge of the substance and role of planning in business and the methodology of planning - test, practical assignments
2. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of systemic planning regularities in business - practical group work, independent work
3. Independently assess a system of plans in an enterprise based on an analytical approach - independent work
4. Reasonably explain and discuss issues on systemic planning in business - practical group work
5. Independently employ statistical and mathematical methods for an economic analysis of systemic planning in business - practical assignments, a test
6. Independently employ relevant theory, methods and problem-solving skills - tests, independent work
7. Find, critically assess and creatively use information for performing a task and finding a solution - practical group work
8. Cooperate and communicate with others - practical group work
9. Define and critically analyse problems in business planning, come up with solutions and justify the decisions made and, if necessary, do an additional analysis - practical assignments, independent work

10. Integrate the knowledge of and skills in different fields to assess a system of plans in an enterprise - independent work

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Historical aspects of planning (lecture - 1 hour)
2. Substance of planning (lecture - 1 hour)
3. Modelling of the planning process in an enterprise (practical assignment - 1 hour)
4. Planning methodology (lecture - 2 hours)
5. Setting business planning tasks by using the retrograde planning method (practical assignment - 1 hour)
6. Setting business planning tasks by using advanced planning method (practical assignment - 1 hour)
7. Test: historical aspects of planning, the substance and methodology of planning (1 hour)
8. Enterprise planning system (lecture - 1 hour)
9. Coherent aiming in planning (lecture - 1 hour, a practical assignment - 2 hours)
10. Legal framework and standards for planning (lecture - 1 hour)
11. System planning by using the SWOT, Business Model Canvas methods (practical assignment - 4 hours)
12. System planning by using the Critical Path Method (practical assignment - 3 hours)
13. Economic efficiency and quality of plans (lecture - 1 hour)

14. Test: planning problem calculations (3 hours)

Requirements for awarding credit points

Formal test with a mark. The mark consist of the following pieces of assessment:
• Test – the evolution of planning, the substance and methodology of business planning (20 %)
• Test - calculations related to planning (30%)
• Practical assignments, practical group work (20%)
• Independent work – an assessment of a system of plans for an enterprise (30%)

10% are equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Independent work: assessing a plan system of a particular enterprise by applying the planning methodology guidelines.

The student must prepare for the tests independently.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The formal test mark is cumulative.
