Course abstract

The study course is aimed at practical acquisition of translation methodology for translation of business and legal documents, understanding of the differences in language use in the normative documents and official legal documents of the EU and the Republic of Latvia. The course includes English-Latvian-English translation of authentic business and legal documents, the analysis of terms and solution of specific translation issues and problems.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After completing the course the students will have:
• knowledge - about the translation process and methods; cognitive and selective knowledge about translation of diverse business and legal documents at enterprises/organizations;
• skills – are able to follow the basic principles and use appropriate methods for translation of business and legal documents; to use specific tools (dictionaries, term basis, data basis, the Internet); to translate business documents of an enterprise/organization into English-Latvian-English;
• competence - students evaluate the differences in English and Latvian language use in business and legal documents, determine translation problems and solve them, use adequate tools effectively in translation of business documents for professional purposes.
