Course abstract

Students get an in-depth knowledge of the essence, functions and methods of human resource management in an organisation. Students build up an understanding of the role and processes of human resource management and are able to elaborate and assess a strategy for human resource management to achieve the goals of the organisation more effectively.
The aim of the study course is to gain in-depth knowledge and skills in human resource management in order to effectively develop, implement and assess human resource management strategy in the organization.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge:
Students will be able to:
• Demonstrate an in depth knowledge of the functions and methods of and trends in human resource management – case study, discussion, group work.
• Demonstrate an in depth knowledge of human resource management processes in an organisation – independent work (presentation), case study.
Skills:
Professional skills
• Draw up and assess a human resource strategy for an organisation – independent work (presentation), situation analysis.
• Do necessary activities in human resource management based on the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired – independent work (presentation), role game, analysis of situation.
Soft skills
• Independently apply theory, research methods and problem-solving skills – independent work (presentation), case study and discussion.
• Find, critically assess and creatively use information for performing a task and finding solution – independent work (presentation), case study, group works and discussion.
• Cooperate and communicate with others – group works, case study.
Competences:
• Define and come up with solutions to human resource management problems, substantiate the solutions and identify the causes of the problem – independent work (presentation), case study and group work.

• Able to use a variety of methods and skills to develop and manage the human resource strategy in an organisation – independent work (presentation).

Course Content(Calendar)

Lectures (12 hours)
1. The essence, functions and tasks of human resource management. The place of human resources and division of skills in business (1 hour)
2. Historical and philosophical development of human resources and its importance nowadays (1 hour)
3. Tendencies and challenges with human resources – political, social, economic and technological challenges in human resource management. Robots and artificial intelligence in entrepreneurship (2 hours)
4. Challenges with different generations in companies. Characteristics of traditionalists, baby boomers, X, Y and Z generations, their values and expectations in companies. Challenges with different generations (1 hour)
5. Culture of organisation, elements of organisation culture and its impact on employee performance. Values of the company (1 hour)
6. Elaboration and implementation of human resource strategy in companies. Methods and tools for defining and implementing a human resources strategy. The role of human resource manager in the organization (1 hour)
7. Planning, recruitment and selection of human resources. Job interviews. Innovative tools in human resource recruitment and selection – online interviews, chatbots, video applications (2 hours)
8. Motivation and performance measurement of human resources (1 hour)
9. Team building and management in companies, ways of team consolidation. Reasons of ineffective teams. Behavioural styles and elasticity (1 hour)
10. Opportunities of socionics for managing human resources. Application of socionics in selection, motivation and team building of human resources (1 hour)
Practical tasks (12 h)
1. Discussion: importance of resources and their functions nowadays (1 hour)
2. Group work: PEST analysis of factors influencing human resources in company (1 hour)
3. Group work: portrait of Y and X generation employee. The challenges of managing these generations in organizations (1 hour)
4. Case study: human resource management problems and the causes at enterprise X (1 hour)
5. Role game: Simulation of a job interview (1 hour)
6. Situation analysis on the involvement of employees in the work – challenges and opportunities (1 hour)
7. Situation analysis: analysis of team work and solutions how to make effective team work (1 hour)
8. Test: behavioral styles (1 hour)
9. Flexibility test of employees (1 hour)
10. Test: Determination of socionic types (1 hour)

11. Independent work (presentation): characteristics and an assessment of a human resource strategy for a chosen organisation (2 hours)

Requirements for awarding credit points

The final grade consists of the cumulative assessment of study results (100 points), which depends on the assessment of both independent works:
• Case study: human resource management problems and the causes at enterprise X – 40 points.
• Independent work: the presentation of characteristics and an assessment of a human resource strategy for a chosen organisation – 60 points.

All practical tasks have to be completed.

The assessment of the study course depends on the assessment of both independent works – a score of 10 is equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale
Independent works are assessed in accordance with the assessment procedure established in the independent work.
