Course abstract

Study course gives a view in science and scientific works, scientific organization in Latvia. In the course the types and organization of students' scientific work are dealt. Bibliography sources and use of information in scientific work. Stages and conditions of topic selection, research design methodology is dealt. In the course widely applicable methods and the selection conditions of scientific work are offered. Presentation and evaluation of research results. Scientific work on an exact theme should be worked out, exposing the ability to characterise the topic’s choice in a relatively short text, its urgency. The course of work, chosen parameters for comparison and calculation methods are described, stressing their prerogatives and efficiency. The work’s results are put into shape of conclusions and recommendations.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After the course studies the student will have:
• Knowledge of construction science and scientific work, organization of scientific work in Latvia. Knowledge of the methodology of scientific research work development in construction science and presentation of research results; Assessment: developed and defended scientific report and presentation, written and submitted theses to the students' scientific conference, test with a mark;
• Skills to organize and plan scientific research in construction science, to apply research methods, to design and evaluate research results; Assessment: developed and defended scientific report and presentation, written and submitted theses to the students' scientific conference, test with a mark;

• Competence - knowledge and practical skills are acquired to assess the role of construction science and research and to create new approaches in the innovative development of the field of construction specialty. Requirements for awarding credit points

Must pass 2 tests on theoretical issues, submit and defend a report on the chosen topic, the course ends with a test with a mark.
The report must be presented at the “Scientific and practical conference of construction study students and master students in Construction” and submitted in the form of theses for publication in the conference report collection of abstracts

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The scientific work consists of 3 main parts: • introduces; • the content is presented in accordance with the sections provided for the task: the problem or solvable task, the current state, variants of the solution, the justification of the choice and forecasts, calculations, volumes, etc.; • closing - main conclusions, proposals.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Scientific work is an independent theoretical, experimental and / or practical study. In defending the research work the student's ability to freely apply the knowledge acquired during studies and to independently select the literature necessary for the work, the ability to compile, analyse and critically evaluate the information on the question and formulate reasoned conclusions and proposals is evaluated.
