Course abstract

Vegetable propagation, justification of planting method, advantages and disadvantages. Vegetable growing technologies in covered areas. Economic and ecological factors in choosing of assortment, cultivars and hybrids. Innovations in vegetable sector. Storage.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge about technologies for growing vegetables in covered areas - tests, practical workshops, seminars;
Are able to choose the most appropriate breeding technology or a particular method under certain agroecological conditions in greenhouses, to justify the choice from a practical, ecological and economical point of view – practical and laboratory work;

Are competent to combine, analyse, use and improve the theoretical and practical knowledges; are able to assess the market situation and make decisions for professional tasks in a particular farm / company – seminars, tests and practical workshops.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Vegetable production in covered areas. The most suitable types of covered areas for Latvian climatic conditions. Microclimate providing methods. Preparation of covered areas for vegetable growing. Basic species, leafy vegetables, radishes etc. breeding in greenhouses. Mechanisation in greenhouses. Advanced techniques and innovations in covered vegetable production. Test 1. 22 hours
2. Vegetable seedlings` growing technologies. 4 hours
3. Visual expression of nutrient deficiency and abundance in vegetables. 3 hours
4. Disinfection of greenhouses and cellars. Storage conditions for vegetables. Test 2. 3 hours
Laboratory / seminars / practical work topics
Practical work in greenhouse and / or garden - vegetable propagation, nursery growing, growing of different species of plants in greenhouse conditions, crop formation, comparison of the obtained results with scientific research data.
Laboratory work – getting acquainted with the variety of visual manifestations of nutrient deficiency and abundance.

Practical work – annual calendar plan for the use of greenhouses on a specialised vegetable farm, assortment, characterisation of growing technologies, calculation of economic indicators.

Requirements for awarding credit points

An exam.
Students who have successfully passed all tests, have developed and got credited practical and laboratory works and have successfully presented their individual work can take the exam.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Seminars – oral presentation about individual topic, discussion.
Individual practical work „Development of a calendar plan for rational use of greenhouse area”, including an overview of professional and scientific literature, distribution of terminated growing of species and cultivars by types of covered areas, a description of the maintenance work to be performed, the potential volume of the obtained products and sales directions. Size of the work 10-15 pages, excl. literature cited list and appendixes. The work should be submitted in written form and presented to the student group at the seminar.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final evaluation of the examination should be the average mark from the examination and the tests written during the semester and the individual practical work`s marks.
It is possible to obtain the accumulating exam rating as the arithmetic mean from the tests written during the semester and the individual job marks, if their score is not lower than 7.
The laboratory, practical and individual works should be evaluated in accordance with the procedures for assessment specified in the laboratory, practical and individual works tasks. Seminar should be prepared about specificē topic, presented and evaluated.
