Course abstract

The study course is aimed at the of development of students’ foreign language (English) knowledge and skills necessary for comprehending, interpreting and evaluating professional information, explaining and comparing processes, participating in discussions, giving presentations in professional and academic environments as well as for communication with foreign students, specialists and academic staff. The focus is on the terminology related to art and design. The English language proficiency level corresponds at least level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for foreign languages.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge and understanding terminology of the field.
Students know the terms from the area:
- the design process and methodology, graphic design, DTP (Test No. 1),
- - types of materials, interior and environmental design, advertising and corporate design (Test No. 2).
Skills:
students are able to define terms, select professional information, explain procedures in relation to the product design, design process and methodology, different types of design practice, give arguments to support their viewpoint, think critically, participate in discussions applying professional terminology and communication skills: in written form - writing descriptions of procedures, business letters; orally - in discussions, dialogues, giving a presentation.
Competence of professional and academic English language in order to apply it creatively in spoken and written communication for student mobility, professional and academic activities in international environment.

Full time intramural studies:
1. Terminology of art and design. Multi-word lexical units. On coining new words. Creating a glossary of terms for each topic. 2h
2. The artist’s portfolio. The structure, fonts, the layout. 2h
3. The design process. The description of the process.2h
4. Planning, the concept, storyboards, development, meeting with clients, final samples. 2h
5. Graphic design. Graphic design versus desktop publishing (DTP). Argumentative essay.2h
6. Traineeship and employment. The letter of application. A role play: a job interview.2h
7. Test No 1 (the design process and methodology, graphic design, DTP).2h
8. Materials and product design. Comparison of metals and non-metals. Types of steel.2h
9. Carbon fibre, its properties. Practical applications of carbon fibre solutions.2h
10. Interior Design. Materials used in interior design. Business correspondence with customers.2h
11. Environmental Design. Sustainable consumer products and industrial processes.2h
12. Advertising Design. Describing types of advertisements. 2h
13. Corporate Design. The comparison of two companies.2h
14. Interactive Design. Discussion.2h
15. Test No 2 (Types of materials, interior and environmental design, terminology).2h
16. The seminar: students’ presentations of individual work.2h

Part time extramural studies:

All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar

Requirements for awarding credit points

Assessment: Examination.
The examination consists of:
a terminology test,
a presentation.

A student is admitted to the examination if there are:
successfully written 2 tests, the glossary of terms for each topic, timely completed home works, completed individual work (reading of professional texts 10 000 characters, the prepared PPoint presentation on the selected topic, the glossary of terms). Tests and home works are with a positive evaluation. The number of the missed classes shall not exceed 20%.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Izstrādāts individuālais darbs:
1. patstāvīgi izvēlēts teksts profesionālās jomas kontekstā (apjoms – 20 000 rakstu zīmes);
2. sagatavota PPoint prezentācija un sniegta 8 – 10 minūšu gara prezentācija par izvēlēto tekstu;
3. iesniegts glosārijs (terminu vārdnīca) ar 30 profesionālās jomas terminu tulkojumiem un 20 terminu definīcijām/skaidrojumiem.
4. studenti spēj izklāstīt izlasīto informāciju, sastādīt kopsavilkumu, salīdzināt situācijas, formulēt domas, loģiski secināt un atbildēt uz jautājumiem par izlasīto materiālu, kā arī mutvārdos tulkot izvēlētā teksta fragmentus

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The examination grade is calculated as an arithmetic mean of grades obtained in two examination tasks. The grade in the terminology test is successful if at least 70% of the answers are correct.
