Course abstract

The course provides in-depth knowledge of the development and trends of the project management industry, focusing on sustainable project management, its basic principles and methods. Students are introduced to the sustainable project management methodology PRiSM and P5 standard. The importance of sustainable project management is substantiated from a political, economic and business perspective. The lectures give an insight into the role and opportunities of a project manager in the context of sustainable development. During theoretical and practical sessions students acquire the ability to see and apply the principles of sustainable operation in the management of any project.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. The student understands the concept and significance of the sustainable project management - independent work (analysis of laws, standards, and recommendations affecting the project; plan and documentation of sustainable project management);
2. Knows sustainable project management methods and techniques - test (sustainable project management methods and techniques);
3. In-depth knowledge of the social, economic and environmental aspects affecting the progress and results of the projects and the impact of the project itself - practical work (environmental, economic and social impact assessment and mitigation plan); independent work (project sustainable management plan and documentation);
4. The student is able to apply sustainable project management techniques in practice and develop sustainable project management documentation - independent work (project sustainable management plan and documentation); test (sustainable project management methods and techniques);
5. Is able to apply and implement the principles of sustainable project management in projects of different types and sectors - practical work (project environmental, economic and social impact assessment and reduction plan); independent work (project sustainable management plan and documentation);
6. Is able to independently develop a plan for sustainable project management and various types of sustainable project management documentation - independent work (project sustainable management plan and documentation);
7. The student is able to independently apply various sustainable project management methods to solve problem situations - independent work (project sustainable management plan and documentation); test (sustainable project management methods and techniques);
8. Is able to independently see and offer sustainable project activities to mitigate project impact - independent work (project sustainable management plan and documentation).

2. Legal framework for sustainable project management.
3. Project life cycle in sustainable project management, P5 sustainable project management standard (2h).
4. Sustainable project management methodology, PRiSM methodology (2h).
5. Integration of environmental aspects into project management.
6. Integrating economic aspects of sustainable development into project management.
7. The role of social aspects in sustainable project management. Culture and project management.
8. Implementation of sustainable project management, role of project manager.
9. Sustainable project management - benefits and losses.

10. The situation and perspective of sustainable project management in Latvia.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Test with a mark consisting of:
-practical work during lectures (20%);
-test on the topics acquired during lectures (20%);
- independent work on the topics acquired during the course (60%).

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

1. independent work. A legal framework for sustainable management of one project (at least 1 page submitted electronically).
2. independent work. Sustainable project management plan and documentation for one project (at least 10 pages, submitted electronically and presented to the audience).

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment of the study course credit depends on the cumulative assessment of the independent work, test and practical work in the classroom.

Successful assessment of practical work can be obtained by participating in practical work in the classroom or submitting it electronically if the student has not been in lecture at the time of practical work.

The student can get a successful grade for the test if at least 50% of the total score is obtained in the test.

Independent work is evaluated according to the evaluation procedure set for independent work. Successful assessment can be achieved by submitting individual assignments in the required time, volume and meeting the requirements defined in the assignment.
