MatZB017 [GMTRB017] CNC Wood Processing

Course abstract

Preparation of the CNC toolpath for machine using CAM applications. CNC machine tool structure and principles of operation, basic programming. Practical skills in work with automated processing CAM software, and the preparation of various types of CNC machine.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Acquired knowledge about the CNC principles of operation, organization of working time, the processing paths, and parameters, cutting technology and processing quality evaluation.
• Skills for CNC equipment inspection and preparation for work, equipment, cutting tools and machining parameters in choosing wood based materials processing path through the preparation of applications, at CAM. • Competence in product manufacturing with CNC equipment, accuracy and surface treatment according to the assessment task.

Course Content(Calendar)

1 Practical work - product design, preparation of processing path.
2 Practical work - production of a product on a CNC machine.
4 Practical work - preparation of a graphic image for engraving on the surface of the material, surface engraving.
5 Laboratory work - installation of Fusion 360 software, creation of a user account, management of documents.
6 Laboratory work - Construction of a multi-part 3D model, assembly of parts and animation.
7 Laboratory work - Bench construction from slab materials, preparation of drawings from 3D model.
8 Laboratory work - Bench strength test, strength increase with constructive solutions.
9 Lecture - CNC machine construction, actuators, cutting tools, machining control path preparation software.
10 Lecture - Possibilities of using robots in woodworking.
11 Lecture - Cutting process technologies on CNC machine tools, application possibilities in woodworking.
12 Laboratory work - Bench material selection, lighting configuration, ambient selection and rendering
13 Laboratory work - Animation of assembly processes.
14 Laboratory work - Preparation and simulation of a tool path Fusion 360.
15 Laboratory work - Construction of extrusion models, 3D extrusion printing.

Requirements for awarding credit points

To qualify for the exam:
- attend at least 85% of classes;
- write and obtain a positive evaluation in two tests; - complete and obtain a positive evaluation in practical and laboratory work.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Construction of a kitchen board, preparation of a processing trajectory for a CNC machine, production of a board.
Preparation of image, graphics for laser engraving, engraving.
Creating a User Profile in Autodesk Fusion 360
Development of threaded parts models.
Bench construction from slab materials.
Bench strength testing, modification, increase of strength indicators by changing constructive solutions.
Bench representation (rendering) by choosing different wood materials and environment, lighting modeling.
Creating a assemble animation. Preparation of drawings from 3D model and design of drawing sheet.
Creation processing path, choice of processing tools, processing path simulation.
Extrusion modeling and 3D printing.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The student receives a high grade if the tasks performed in the laboratory and practical work in the planned time are fully completed, well designed and the student knows the progress of the work and is able to answer questions.
