Course abstract

The aim of the course is to provide set of practical skills of casting and forging in machinery engineering; processing types and products; Welding process and equipment for electrical, gas and pressure welding, technology and materials: theory of material cutting process; metal cutting machinery, equipment, tools and technology.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Knowledge - metal cutting processes and its parameters – Test No 1. and laboratory works; knowledge of metal cutting machines, cutting tools and metalworking technological processes – Test No 2. and laboratory works;
2. Skills - knowledge of the technological bases of mechanical engineering – Test No 3; capable of evaluating the geometrical parameters of cutters and evaluating the impact of the cutting process on the surface quality - laboratory works;

3. Competence - students are able to assess the impact of the cutting force on the cutting-off process – laboratory work. Capable of calculating gear cutting parameters and choosing the abrasive materials for surface grinding – laboratory works.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Cutting process and its parameters. Types of processing. Cutting in motion processing. Geometry of cutting tools: planes, surfaces, angles. The size and impact of the angles on the processing process – 1h;
2. Working conditions of cutting instruments and requirements for cutting instrument materials – 1h;
Test 1 – The theoretical basis of cutting process – 1h;
3. High speed steel, its characteristics and uses. Marking according to EN and LV standards – 1h;
4. Metal-ceramic and mineral-ceramic cutting instrument materials. Their characteristics and uses – 1h;
5. Special hard cut instrument materials: synthetic diamonds and cubic boron nitrite – 1h;
6. Choose of cutting tools according to ISO recommendations – 1h;
7. Physical bases of metal working. Material resistance to cutting, cutting forces and their determination. Permissible cutting speed – 1h;
8. Classifications of metal cutting machines, precision classes, drive – 1h;
9. Turning, cutting tools, appliances and machines – 1h;
10. Drilling, expanding and shedding works, cutting tools, appliances and machines – 1h;
11. Milling works, cutting tools, appliances and machines. Kinetics and dynamics of the milling process – 1h;
12. Oblique cutting process, tools and machines – 1h;
Test 2 – Metalworking technological processes – 1h;
13. Metal abrasive machining. Construction and marking of grinding wheels. Grinding works and machines. Specific metalworking types – 1h;
Test 3 – Technological bases for mechanical engineering – 1h.

1. Research of metal cutter geometry – 2h;
2. Research of multi-blade cutting tools – 2h;
3. Research of abrasive tools – 2h;
4. Basics of sharpening cutting tools – 2h;
5. Cutting force measurements – 2h;
6. Threading with a lathe – 2h;
7. Straight gear milling – 1h;
8. Helical gear milling – 1h;
9. Tooth cutting with hob cutters – 1h;

10. Tooth cutting with shaper - 1h.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Test type - exam. Examination tasks consist of: test about theoretical study; practical task on topics learned from laboratory works. All tests and laboratory work must be credited.

Preparation for 3 tests and laboratory works. – 48 hours;

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Students who have at least assessment 6 in this course of study. The final examination test may not write, and the test rating is compared with the test assessment.
