Course abstract

Students acquire knowledge about structure, classification, isomerism of organic compounds, the type of reactions, hidrocarbons, organic halogen compounds, alcohols, phenols, ethers, organic compounds containing sulfur and nitrogen, karbonilcompounds, carboxylic acids, hydroxyacids, carbohydrates, lipids, aminoacids, peptides, proteins, heterocyclic compounds, nucleic acids.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students are able to demonstrate their knowledge about the basic concepts of organic chemistry, regularities, the interaction of organic compounds and a critical understanding of the place and role of organic chemistry in various processes and phenomena - lectures and tests; Students acquire skills to think analytically and creatively use the regularities of organic chemistry in practice, study process and professional activity - practical works and presentation of laboratory reports. Competence to objectively evaluate new information, ability to independently find and select it, as well as to use it in solving issues related to organic chemistry in practical work - practical works and presentation of laboratory reports.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Lecture. Classification and nomenclature of hydrocarbons. (1h). Seminar: Classification and nomenclature of hydrocarbons. Properties of hydrocarbons (2h).
2. Lecture. Test "Classification, nomenclature and properties of hydrocarbons". (1h). Laboratory. Qualitative analysis of hydrocarbons. Qualitative analysis of unsaturated terpenes in turpentine. Extraction of turpentine from resins. (2h)
3. Lecture. Alcohols, phenols and ethers. Classification and nomenclature. (1h). Seminar. Properties of alcohols and phenols. Laboratory: comparison of chemical properties of polyhydric alcohols with monohydric alcohols, differences. Qualitative determination of phenols. Reactions of alcohols with alkali, bromine. (2h)
4. Lecture. Organic compounds containing sulfur and nitrogen (Thiols and amines). Nomenclature and classification. (1h). Seminar: Chemical properties of thiols and amines. Laboratory: obtaining of methylamine, some properties of aniline, reactions between amines and nitrogen acid (2h)
5. Lecture. Test “Classification and properties of alcohols and phenols. Thiols and amines, their properties and classification. " (1h). Seminar: Classification and nomenclature of aldehydes and ketones. Isomerism. Laboratory: Qualitative determination of aldehydes. Properties of acetone. (2h)
6. Lecture. Properties of aldehydes and ketones (1h). Test: „Properties of aldehydes and ketones. Seminar. Quinones, their biological significance. (2h)
7. Lecture. Carboxylic acids. Classification and nomenclature. (1h) Seminar. Chemical properties of carboxylic acids. Laboratory: Different properties of organic acids and inorganic acids. (2h)
8. Lecture. Test "Properties of carboxylic acids" (1h). Seminar. Prevalence of fats in nature, composition and structure of fats. Physical properties of fat. Solid fats and oils. (1h)
9. Lecture. Chemical properties of fat. (1h). Laboratory: Extraction of oils from oilseeds. (1h)
10. Lecture. Lipids, their biological significance. Fat saponification. (1h) Laboratory: Determination of unsaturated fats. (1h)
11. Test “Properties of fats and lipids. (1h). Seminar. Carbohydrates, their classification and nomenclature. Monosaccharides. (1h)
12. Lecture. Chemical properties of monosaccharides. (1h) Laboratory: Qualitative determination of aldoses. Qualitative determination of fructose. (1h)
13. Lecture. Disaccharides and polysaccharides, their properties. (1h) Laboratory:. Qualitative determination of starch. Hydrolysis of polysaccharides. Distinction between reducing and non - reducing sugars. (1h)
14. Test „Carbohydrates and their properties. (1h) Seminar. Amino acids, their classification and nomenclature.
15. Lecture. Amino acid properties. (1h) Seminar. Heterocyclic compounds (2h)
16. Lecture. Nucleic acids. (1h) Test: Proteins, DNA and RNA. (1h)

Requirements for awarding credit points

To receive a course grade, students must perform the following criteria:
• Students must perform all laboratory works and submit laboratory reports;
• Students must write all tests during the semester (at least 4) and complete exam (at least 4).
If the average mark in the tests is not less than 7 and no more than two tests are overwritten, the exam may not be taken.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Preparing for test and practical works. Reading scientific literature, analysing results of experiments.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final grade of the study course is calculated using a marking scheme:
•tests (80%);
•laboratory works (20%);
All laboratory work must be inducted and included in laboratory work protocols.
Each of the above course activities forms a certain percentage of the total mark.
The student must obtain a successful assessment (at least 4 points) for each course activity.
The course is completed if all the above conditions are met.
