Course abstract

Students are acquainted with the structure of the intellectual property and the results of the work of technical innovation which, as intellectual property,
can obtain legal protection. Emphasis is aimed on the possibilities of legal protection of inventions, Latvian patent legislation and international
cooperation in the field of protection of industrial property. Short insight into protection of copyright and neighbouring rights.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: By completion of the study course students acquire knowledge about varieties of the intellectual property and basic principles of protection of the intellectual property, conditions for issuing of their legal protection documents and which authorities are responsible for it.
Skills: Be able to draw up patent application documents for an invention. Knowledge and skills are evaluated in the presentation of the final report or result written quiz.
Competency: Be competent to get additional information and legal assistance for protection of intellectual property.

1. Forms of intellectual property and forms of their legal protection. Industrial property and copyright. – 2h
2. Invention and its nature. Types of inventions. Basic invention and additional invention. Basic features of the invention. – 2h
3. Formula and claim of invention. Principles of description of the invention. – 2h
4. Patent legislation of Latvia. Latvia Patent office, its functions and structure. International patent conventions. – 1h
5. Patent information sources and databases. Esoacenet. Searching for patent information in patent libraries and on the web. – 2h
6. Patent application procedure in Latvia. Procedure of examination of patent application. – 2h
7. Patent application procedure in European Patent office. Procedure of examination of patent application in European Patent office. – 2h
8. Searching of patent information. Filling of patent application forms. (practical class) – 2h
9. Description of the invention (practical class) – 2h
10. Commercial application of the patent. Licensing of the patent– 1h
11. Industrial design, its role in business. Legal protection of the industrial design– 1h
12. Application of the industrial design. Procedure of examination of application of the industrial design. Registration of the industrial design. – 1h
13. Trade mark, its role in business and international trade. Forms of legal protection of trade marks. – 1h
14. Basic principles of copyright and neighbouring rights. – 1h
15. Possibilities of copyright protection of construction designs– 1h
16. Report or presentation on protection of intellectual property at credit test or written quiz. – 1h

Requirements for awarding credit points

In order to get check with rating and the credit points students shall prepare report and presentation for an object linked with a master’s thesis or pass a written quiz

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students independently acquire knowledge by studying of technical literature to prepare report and presentation or to prepare for a written quiz

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment is based on the quality of the report and its presentation or the result of the written quiz
