Course abstract

The studies provide an understanding of the constructive structure of a public building, functional planning and the design game of building volumes. The goal is to learn to balance the avant-garde of the building, the context of construction and planning, and also evaluate the harmony of the external space form.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

The knowledge that gives the ability to balance the constructive spatial structure of building volumes with stylistic trends in architecture at the level of project development. 1-11 practical work.
Skill - to synthesize the latest style trends in architecture and art in the interior and exterior/outdoor space. 1-11 practical work.
Competence increases, looking for the connection of the external design of the building with the design of the outdoor space/garden/courtyard. 1-11 practical work.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Public buildings; their division, functional space planning; architectural design of building volumes. (lecture – 4h).
2. Visit to an existing public building. Study of the functional space planning, evacuation routes. (lecture – 4h).
3. Evaluation of the topographic survey for an existing public building. Access roads, functional organization of the outdoor space (parking lots, green areas, etc.); (lecture – 4h).
4. Digital transfer of the existing plan into the AutoCad/ArchiCad system. The volume of the designed extension - a task for the reconstruction of the construction volume. Implementation of sketches for the redevelopment of the premises (lecture 2h; practical work No. 1 – 2h).
5. Functional connection of the designed premises and existing premises. Provision of evacuation routes and stairs; Number of WCs - regulatory requirements. Facade literature study offers (lecture – 2h; practical work No. 2 – 2h).
6. Floor-by-floor plan corrections (2nd or 3rd floor construction volume). Balancing the projected areas of the premises. Parallel to the planning - a search for facade design. Roof garden, railing glazing; UPP (lecture – 2h; practical work No. 3 – 2h).
7. Insolation assessment for rooms. Use of windows, showcases, glazed partitions in the planning. Facade sketch solutions. Design of glazed elevators in facades. (lecture – 2h; practical work No. 4 – 2h).
8. Implementation of construction volume characteristics. Acceptance of the final version of the facade design. (practical work No. 5 – 4h).
9. Functional compositional connection of outdoor space, facades and planning design. Terraces, canopies, typical node solutions for structural stability of wood; emergency transport access; search for the context of facades with the surrounding urban development/cultural heritage space (according to catalogs). (lecture -2h; practical work No. 6 – 2h).
10. Implementation of the design visualization of the building volume and the adjacent outdoor space (practical work No. 7 – 4h).
11. Reinforced concrete (precast, monolithic) floors of the building volumes (interfloor, roof) practical work No. 8 – 4h).
12. Connection of typical insulation nodes (floors, foundations, external walls, ceiling). Partition sound insulation nodes (lecture – 2h; practical work No. 9 – 2h).
13. Marking the locations of node solutions in sections (lecture – 2h; practical work. No. 10 – 2h).
14. Completion of the visualization volume (practical work No. 11 – 4h).
15. The final stage of the construction project. Admission to the defense of the work; understanding the BIS system
(lecture – 4h).

16. Digital presentation of the construction project (summary lecture – 4h).

Requirements for awarding credit points

Exam/digital presentation defending the project idea and providing reasoned answers to the questions. Attendance 75%.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Practical work No. 1 – digital transfer of the existing building volume in AutoCad/ArchiCad.
Practical work No. 2 – Functional connection of the planned premises and existing premises.
Practical work No. 3 – Plan corrections by floor. Explanation of rooms, their functional logic; accessibility of environment; evacuation routes; fumigation; UPP.
Practical work No. 4 – glazed showcases in facades; search for glazed partitions and insolation in the functional planning of rooms.
Practical work No. 5 – sections of the building volume, facade solutions.
Practical work No. 6 – search for the context of outdoor design with the construction volume.
Practical work No. 7 – reinforced concrete covering solutions. DOP.
Practical work no. 8 – selection of typical insulation units from catalogues.
Practical work no. 9 – Partition sound insulation units.
Practical work no. 10 – Marking the locations of knot solutions in cuts.
Practical work no. 11 – Completion of visualization volume.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Each practical work is a presentation of the current work task assigned to students with a discussion.
Digital presentation of the final work, exam - assessment with a grade. For works submitted after the specified time (if there is no justifiable reason), the grade is reduced in accordance with the assessment rules approved by the institute.
