Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to provide a set of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in casting production technology; about pressure treatment types and production; billet heating and forging technology; welding processes, equipment and types; theoretical foundations of processing turning; for metalworking machines, devices, tools and technological processes.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge to provide a set of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in casting production technology. Assessment - test.
Skills in part pressure machining and production; blank heating and forging technology; welding process, equipment and types. Assessment - test and laboratory work reports.

Competences to manage work processes with metalworking machines, devices, tools and technological processes. Assessment of independent work.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Production of castings. General information about the production of castings. Importance of castings in mechanical engineering - 2h.
2. Production of castings in clay molds. Building materials, equipment and technology – 2h.
3. The latest types of casting production: shell moulds, molds for fusible models, metal molds and pressure casting - 2h.
4. Theoretical foundations of pressure treatment. Plastic deformation, formation of anvil. Recrystallization. Heating of blanks for pressure treatment – 1h.
5. Undesirable phenomena during heating. Temperature interval – 1h.
6. Technological processes of pressure treatment: rolling, drawing and pressing - 2h.
7. Forging production. Free forging, tools, equipment and technology. Volume punching. Stamping of sheets - 2h.
1st test: (Manufacturing of castings and pressure treatment) – 1h.
8. Metal welding. Basics of the formation of welded joints. Welded joints and seams - 2h.
9. Weldability of metals. Its criteria. Welding technology of various metals and the peculiarities of seam formation - 2h.
10. Welding in protective gases. MIG/MAG and TIG processes. Influence and choice of protectors. Welding wire – 5h.
11. Welding current sources, their external characteristic curves. Selection and use of power sources – 1h.
12. Gas welding process. Structure and types of gas flame. Gas welding gases and technology – 1h.
2nd test: (Metal welding) – 1h.
13. Thermal cutting of metals with plasma - 1h.
14. Thermal cutting of metals with a laser beam - 1h.
15. Metal soldering, soldering materials and technology – 1h.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Test type - test. All tests work, laboratory work must be carried out. Delayed lectures shall not exceed 10% of the total.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Preparing for 2 tests - 38h.
1. homework. Describe the types of metal casting (submitted in electronic or written form.) – 13h;
2. homework. Describe the types of metal welding (submitted in electronic or written form.) – 13h.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Students who have successfully developed tests and laboratory works for this study course may not write the final test.
