Course abstract
Students acquire knowledge of the theoretical as well as practical role of tourism and recreation. Within the course, students identify and assess tourism and recreation products, resources the products consist of, gain practical skills in designing and managing an excursion route as well as knowledge of security and potential risks in tourism and recreation.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
KNOWLEDGE:
Students will be able to:
demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the concepts and kinds of tourism and recreation (independent work).
Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the nature and resources of tourism and recreation, the kinds and products of tourism (test).
Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of safety, security and environment-friendly principles in tourism and recreation (practical assignments).
Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of tourism as a system and the key elements and external environment of the tourism industry (test).
SKILLS
Professional skills:
Independently design a touristic route, involving various tourism resources, and present it (independent work).
Reasonably explain and discuss environment-friendly tourism and recreation (discussions in classes).
Independently analyse tourism and recreation, using the knowledge of environment-friendly kinds and products of tourism and recreation (test).
Soft skills:
Responsibly plan the completion of the assignments given (practical assignments).
Acquire accurate information, prepare presentations and speak in public (independent work).
Take part in group work and discussions (discussions in classes, an educational trip).
COMPETENCE:
Independently analyse various products and resources of tourism and recreation in the context of safe, secure and environment-friendly excursions (examination). Comprehend the role of tourism in the national economy and apply the knowledge of tourism and recreation in tourism enterprises (tests, practical assignments).

Topics of lectures:
1.Introduction to tourism and recreation.
2.Travellers as consumers of tourism and recreation.
3.Classification of tourism and recreation.
4.Resources of tourism and recreation. Kinds of tourism.
5.Products of tourism and recreation and the supply of the products.
6.Specifics and components of the tourism and recreation industry.
7.Effects of the tourism industry on the society, economy, politics and culture.
8.Establishment of touristic routes.
9.Environment-friendly and socially responsible principles in establishing and organising excursion routes. Bicycle tourism.
10.Rehabilitation and medical tourism.
11.Safety and security, their role in tourism and recreation.
Topics of practicals and seminars
1.Nature of tourism and recreation (1 hour).
2.Resources and products of tourism (3 hours).
3.Test: the nature, kinds, resources and products of tourism and recreation (1 hour).
4.System approach to tourism analysis. Cooperation. An educational excursion (4 hours).
5.Test: the key elements of the tourism industry (1 hour).
6.Route planning: the examination and selection of sightseeing places. Techniques of guiding excursions. Tour guides. Spending leisure time (2 hours).
7.Presentation of a route designed (2 hours).
8.Safety, security and environment-friendly principles in tourism: the examples of bicycle and medical tourism (1 hour).
9.Test: excursion routes and environment-friendly principles in tourism and recreation (1 hour).
Requirements for awarding credit points
Examination.
Tests (within the time specified); a maximum score of 30.
Independent assignments (during the entire semester); a maximum score of 30.
Examination (within the time specified); a maximum score of 40. A score of 10 is equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale

Independent assignment Touristic Route has to be submitted and presented within the time specified
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
Students earn a pass mark in a test if at least 50% of the questions are answered correctly.
Independent assignments are assessed in terms of whether they meet quality requirements for the specific tasks performed. Discussions are assessed in terms of skills to reasonably explain and discuss the issues pertaining to tourism and recreation.
