Course abstract
The aim of the course is to introduce students to project management as process and resource planning, implementation control and cost estimation; to gain practical skills in working with MS Office Project software and the method of analyzing hierarchical processes using MS Office Excel. Students should develop and submit an individual study project.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knows the essence, concepts, methods and strategies of Project Management (theory test, individual study project).
Knows SWOT, Logframe, WBS, Gantt Chart, CPM and PERT methods for project planning and risk detection in project management (practical works, test, individual study project).
Able to create an accurate project plan for solving a specific problem using PMBOK strategy and MS Office Project app (practical works, individual study project).
Able to select the most appropriate alternative using the Analytical Hierarchy Process method and the MS Office Excel app (individual study project).
Is able to apply acquired knowledge and practical skills for optimal planning of resources in Project Management (individual study project). Able to publicly present the project plan (individual study project).
Course Content(Calendar)
1 Introduction to Project Management (2 h).
2 SWOT, Logframe and WBS methods for the individual study project (6 h).
3 Gantt chart, CPM and PERT techniques in project planning and risk determination (2 h).
4 Test (1 h).
5 Familiarisation with PMBOK® and MS Office Project (2 h).
6 Project structuring, the basic parameter setup and plan optimization with MS Office Project (4 h).
7 Resource mapping and load scheduling with MS Office Project (2 h).
8 Analysis of the cost with MS Office Project (2 h).
9 Project information presentation capabilities with MS Office Project (2 h).
10 Decision-making with Analytic Hierarchy Process with MS Excel (3 h).
11 The development of individual study project (6 h). 12 Public presentation of an individual training project and acquaintance with other projects (4 h).
Requirements for awarding credit points
Successfully passed the exam - at least 50% of the individual project assessment.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Four special methods and MS Project system application for an individual training project offered in e-learning system (http://estudijas.llu.lv).
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The exam cumulative assessment depends on compulsory individual study project (80%) and the two theory tests (20%).
