Course abstract
The course provides knowledge of the higher education system in Latvia and insight into the speciality studied, the way the learning process is organized and managed and the relevant legal framework. Students gain knowledge of the history, structure and administration of LBTU and ESAF, are familiarized with the study plan and curricula of the courses and are informed about their opportunities for studies and experience exchange abroad. Students learn to use the resources for learning provided by LBTU and available scientific literature and statistics databases. The course gives basic knowledge of finding and analysing scientific literature and statistical data and interpreting the research results.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledge. Students will be able to:
demonstrate the knowledge of the speciality to be learnt, the curriculum of the programme, the way the learning process is organized and managed as well as the legal framework on the learning process at LBTU. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the history, structure and administration of LBTU and ESAF (multiple choice test). Demonstrate the knowledge of literature databases and the information to be searched for therein. Demonstrate the knowledge of statistical databases and the information to be searched for therein. Demonstrate the knowledge of how to make a review of literature and use statistical data (practical assignment, independent work).
Skills. Apply the acquired knowledge to organize and manage their own learning process and meet the learning requirements. Find and analyse scientific literature on a specific topic. Search and compile statistical data on a specific topic, create tables and figures, interpret the results (practical assignment, independent work). Competence. Use the legal framework and documents on the learning process. Use library and e-resources in their learning and in doing research. Use the resources of literature and statistical databases (multiple choice test, practical assignment, independent work).
Course Content(Calendar)
1.Higher education system in Latvia [Lessons, 2 h].
2.Study types. Individual studies. Practical placement in the study process. Study evaluation: principles; types; evaluation system. Registration of academic records. Study organisation: courses; study year; semester; individual studies and assignments, academic leave. Studies according to an individual plan. Study courses that have been studied in other higher education institution, academic recognition. Elaboration and defence of the Bachelor thesis and study projects. [Lessons, 6 h].
3.Rights and obligations of students [Lesson 1 h].
4.Other aspects of study life. Engagement in sports and performing arts during the studies. Traditions of LBTU [Lessons, 2 h].
5.Structure and Constitution of LBTU. History and development of LBTU. [Lesson, 1 h].
6.Structure of ESAF, history, development and structural units of the faculty. [Lesson, 1 h].
7.Use of the Moodle system and regulations for its use in LBTU [Lessons, 2 h].
8.International mobility of students for studies and experience exchange abroad, involvement in the Erasmus+ mobility program in the LBTU. Partner universities. Application process for mobility and required documents. [Lesson, 1 h].
9.Search of the information in the literature databases. Use of the BIS ALEPH Electronic database and the databases of the Library of LBTU. Databases of e-books and e-magazines. [Practical assignments, 8 h].
10.Finding and collecting data from the statistical databases, use of data, data management and analysis. Statistical databases in Latvia (CSB; LDC, SUDAT) and international databases (EUROSTAT, OECD, FAO u.c.) data classification, search options [Practical assignments, 8 h].
Requirements for awarding credit points
Students have to pass the test, do the practical assignments and give a presentation of their individual research work.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Before the discussions in class, students get acquainted with the regulatory framework of the study process. Performs data search in statistical databases and develops a review of scientific literature about a particular topic and prepares a presentation.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The final mark is calculated as a cumulative of: tests (20 points), participation in the field trip to LBTU Ltd trainig and research farm “Vecauce” (10 points), scientific literature review (20 points), statistical data review (20 points), presentation of the individual research work (30 points).
