Course abstract
The aim of the course is to give the students the necessary insight and knowledge on higher education, study process and study environment at the university and faculty helping to start the studies successfully paying special attention to the development of higher education in the world, Latvia, LULST (Latvia University of Life Science and Technologies), development of study programs, organization of the study process and multiformity of student life, content of the Applied Energetic study program and expected results of studies.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledge - the essence, levels and models of higher education and studies; History of LULST, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Energy study program development; content of the study program and expected study results, organization of the study process. 1st and 2nd independent work.
Skills - student is able to apply the knowledge acquired in the course to ensure a successful study process. 3. independent work.
Competence - to apply the knowledge acquired in the course to ensure a successful study process, starting studies in the Applied Energy study program in the evaluation of the basic principles of the study process. Test with mark.
Course Content(Calendar)
Full time intramural studies:
1. Basics of higher education, development history and tendencies in the world, EU, Latvia, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LULST) and Faculty of engineering. (Lectures 1h)
2. Establishment, development and study offer of the Latvia University of life Sciences. (Lectures 1h)
3. Faculty of Engineering, its development and study offer. (Lectures 1h)
4. Study environment at the faculty, study and research laboratories. (Lectures 1h, practical works 2h)
5. LULST Normative basis of studies, Law on Higher Education Institutions, state standards of education. University Study Regulations, study agreements. (Lectures 1h)
6. LULST Fundamental Library, search for information in the library. (Practical works 3h)
7. History of LULST and castle, museums of LULST and castle. (Lectures 1h, practical work 3h)
8. LULST research activities, Law on Scientific Activity. (Lectures 1h)
9. The essence of the profession and work of an engineer, types of engineers, the essence of scientific work and it’s difference from the work of an engineer. (Lectures 1h, Practical works 2h) 10. Study works, regulations of their execution and design. (Lectures 1h, Practical works 2h)
11. Organization of studies at the faculty. (Lectures 1h)
12. Rotation to state-funded study places, regulations, application procedure (Lectures 1h, practical works 1h)
13. Scholarships at LULST (state and verbal), opportunities, rules, application procedure. (Lectures 1h, practical works 2h)
14. History of Applied Energy study program, job opportunities of graduates, most outstanding graduates. (Lectures 1h)
15. Content, plan, implementation of the Applied Energy study program. (Lectures 2h, practical work 1h)
16. Possibilities of subspecialization of Applied Energy study program, organization of practices and examinations. (Lectures 1h)
Part time extramural studies:
All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar
Requirements for awarding credit points
Test with a mark.
Three independent works and an essay on impressions in the first semester of studies must be included.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Students prepare independent works and write an essay.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The evaluation of a test with a mark depends on the evaluation of the independent work and the essay, as well as on the attendance of classes.
