Course abstract

The students must acquire all the themes included in the State Exam, which are formulated in the test questions and in theoretical descriptions of clinical cases. At the exam, the level of students’ theoretical knowledge is tested and their ability to use it when thinking about the animal as an undivided organism in context of internal diseases and associated pathological changes.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Learning Outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences):
The student should be able to demonstrate:
Knowledge: about the structure and functions of animal organs; the aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment of common diseases in the common domestic species; medicines legislation and guidelines on responsible use of medicines; the principles of disease prevention. – Test.
Skills: communicate effectively with clients, the lay public and colleagues, using language in a form appropriate to audience and the context; be aware of the ethical responsibilities of the veterinary surgeon in relation to individual animal care and client relations; act with regard to the veterinary surgeon’s professional and ethical codes, be aware of personal limitations. – Case analysis.
Competence: obtain an accurate and relevant history of the ill animal; handle and restrain an animal safely and humanely; perform a complete clinical examination and collect, preserve and transport samples; perform laboratory tests and interpret results of those; advice and administer appropriate treatment; attend in an emergency treatment of all domestic animals; perform a basic gross post mortem examination, record details, sample tissues, store and transport them. - Case analysis.

Course Content(Calendar)

Students' independent work is planned for 40 hours in which they must prepare for the exam on the following topics:
1. Review lectures "Cardiovascular system, Physiology of the respiratory system, Clinical examination, diseases"
2. Review lectures "Physiology, clinical examination, Diseases of the gastrointestinal system (including liver)"
3. Review lectures "Stress reaction physiology. Metabolic diseases, their laboratory diagnostics "
4. Review lectures "Physiology of the urinary system, diseases, their laboratory diagnostics"
5. Review lectures "Cutaneous and central nervous diseases"
6. Review lectures "Hypovitaminoses and hypomicroelementoses, their clinical diagnosis, treatment, prevention"
7. Review lectures " Animals’ poisoning with mycotoxins, plant-based toxic substances, nutrients and feed additives, environmental contaminants"
8. Review lectures "Herd health control of cows: cows feeding quality, metabolic disorders, calf rearing and reproduction management"
9. Review lectures "Pharmacodynamics, NSAIDs and pharmacodynamics of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids"
10. Review lectures "Drug interaction and selection principles for the treatment of animal diseases"
11. Review lectures "Animal necropsy: procedure, documentation, sampling and disposal of animal bodies
12. Review lectures " Inflammation process: types, causes, morphology and pathogenesis "
13. Review lectures "Respiratory system pathologies, their morphology and pathogenesis"

Requirements for awarding credit points

The State Exam consists of two parts: the test and the oral exam. Written test and oral exam answers are evaluated by all members of the State Examination Commission. The test consists of 100 theoretical questions. To be able to successfully pass the test, there must be at least 65% correct answers. The State Exam mark is calculated: it is the arithmetic mean value (in points) obtained from the evaluation of the written test and the orally answered theoretical analyses of one clinical case.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students independently repeat the previously acquired knowledge of courses in connection with the State Exam questions.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

In order to get Access to the State Exam, the student must successfully accomplish the requirements of the study program (for all study courses - tests, exams, practices). The both parts of the State Exam (the test and the oral answer) are evaluated in accordance with the criteria of the 10 point grading scale indicated in the LLU Study Regulations. The exam must be evaluated with a successful mark.
