Course abstract

During studies students are got acquainted with the Latvian and European Union legislative process; the types of legislation in Latvia and European Union; the most important legislative requirements in the field of the control and eradication of the infectious diseases of animals; the requirements for the identification and registration of animals; the process of the registration (authorisation) of veterinary medicines, rules for the distribution and use of them as well as relevant documentation; the types, quality and safety rules of animal feed; the principles of action with animal by-products.

In Ethics sub-program acquires ethical behavior guiding principles, action in veterinary professional work in various situations and scope, moral code.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Sub-programme Organisation of Veterinary Work III:
Knowledge - insight in the related to the veterinary field legislation and its application; elements of the official control; the rights, obligations, responsibilities of veterinary practitioners.
Skills to find and apply the corresponding Latvian or European Union legislative norms according to the performed veterinary activity.
Competence to know and to apply in a right way the veterinary legislation in force doing veterinary practise; working in the competent authority and performing official duties; working in other fields related to the keeping transporting, trading with animals; involved in production, evaluation, distribution, usage of medication; distribution and usage of animal feed; handling of animal by-products.
At the end of the course, one test.
Test can take the student who attended lectures and have made topical reports.
Sub-programme Ethic:
Knowledge – comprehension of the fundamental principles of ethics, related legislation and its application - case analysis.
Skills to find and apply legislative norms according to the situation – case analysis.
Competence to be able to analyse specific ethical cases, and determinate what is and what is not ethical - case analysis.

4. Legislation, veterinary legislation in Latvia. 6 h
5. Food and Veterinary Service. 6 h
6. Control of imports, exports and transit of food products. 6 h
7. Organization of laboratory examinations in Latvia. 6 h
8. Organisation of control of infectious diseases in Latvia. 6 h
9. Organisation of food control in Latvia. 6 h
10. The production and distribution of veterinary feed. 6 h
11. Rights and obligations of animal owners. Welfare organization. 6 h
12. Education of veterinary medicine. Latvian Association of Veterinarians. 6 h

Sub-programme Ethic:
1. Murphy laws for doctors. Insight into the concepts: ethics, morality, deontology, etiquette. 2 h
2. What determines what is ethical? How does an individual decide what is ethical? 2 h
3. Forms of thinking, rules of logic. Concept, judgement, conclusion. 2 h
4. The essence of business ethics nowadays. 2 h
5. Fundamental principles of medical ethics, the principle of fairness. 2 h
6. Characteristics that the veterinarian must have. 2 h
7. Code of ethics for veterinarians in Latvia. 2 h
8. Code of Ethics: professional behavior; veterinarian, patient and client. 2 h
9. Code of Ethics: veterinarian and colleague. 2 h
10. The influence of temperament on professional activity. 2 h

Requirements for awarding credit points

Passed a test in sub-programme Organisation of Veterinary Work II.
Sub-programme Ethic:
Attended lectures and seminars of at least 80%
Each student should present one case analysis with visible ethical violations.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Independent investigation of normative acts follows the tasks specified in the practical work. Reporting current issues during practical lectures.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Sub-programme Organisation of Veterinary Work II:
The topical reports are evaluated in accordance with the tasks of the practical works.
To get the final grade of the study course "passed", tests must be evaluated with a successful grade.

Sub-programme Ethic:
To get the final grade of the study course "passed", case analysis must be presented successful.
