Course abstract

Explore the most common wood materials and their areas of usability, the most common connective features of different products, their usability; the most common types of material compounds in width, length and thickness.
In the course of the semester, the design of different products, the basic concepts of optimization and modelling shall be studied.
Model optimization models made in the form of linear programming tasks.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Learners know the most common types of wood materials and their properties, the types of connecting different components and elements and their properties (1st Test). Know the most common types of wood products structures. Know the basic concepts of optimization (2nd Test).
Learners understand the effects of different wood materials, connectives and compounds on product performance and production (1st Test). Understanding the importance of optimization in the production process (2nd Test, Practical works).
Learners are able to choose materials appropriate for production specificity, connective features, connections and other technical solutions, and to perform the optimization of material consumption (Practical works).

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Positive and negative properties of wood as material. (lecture 1h)
2. Breakdown of wood materials. Positive and negative properties of different wood materials. (lecture 2h + Practical work 1h)
3. Combining different wood materials for use in wood products. (lecture 1h + Practical work 1h)
4. Breakable, unbreakable connections. (lekcija1h + Practical work 1h)
5. Ways of connecting materials in width, length and thickness. (lecture 1h + Practical work 1 h)
6. Types of compounds, their positive and negative properties. (lecture 3h + Practical work 1h)
1st Test
7. Key concepts of modelling and optimization, composition and terms of mathematical models. (lecture 1h + Practical work 2h)
8. Optimization of material sap plan. (lecture 2h + Practical work 2h)
2nd Test

9. Construction of the product. (lecture 2h + Practical work 7h)

Requirements for awarding credit points

To obtain a successful final assessment:
• a minimum of 75% of lessons must be attended;
• must be written and received a positive assessment of both tests;
• a wood product project should be developed and defended.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The student is preparing for tests, lectures and practical works independently.
Ongoing, but unfinished, practical work needs to be completed until the next practical work lesson.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final assessment consists of:
• visit – 10%;
• a test of 40%;
• the design of the product – 25%;

• defence of the designed product – 25%.
