Course abstract
The students acquire knowledge about the Latvian terminology of the forest botany and the history of its development, about theoretical and practical aspects of terminology, as well as about formulation and analysis of theoretical principles necessary for development of terminology.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledge about the history of the flora terminology in Latvia, effect of the language contacts on the development of the national botany terminology, its traditions and problems, about the functions (terminology, communication) of the Latin term of taxon, about the mutual connection between the Latin and Latvian terms, about the principles and models of the terminology. Skills to analyze and evaluate adequacy of the usage of the Latin term into Latvian, especially, if the rank or/and taxonomic status of the taxon changes – to create Latvian terms for plants in botany and related areas. Competence to identify and explain national botany terminology problems, to evaluate the synonymic links of the Latin term of taxon and accordingly to choose combined terminology and justify the choice.
