The bryophytes are one of the most ancient and species richest compartments of the kingdom of plants with original constitution and reproduction. The Latvian moss flora is rich on species - till up to now there are 550 species registered, most of those abundant in forests. The mosses are important compartment of the forest cenosis and for the forest typology. The knowledge in botany will be improved.
Students have obtained knowledge in sistematics, morphology and physiology of mosses and liverworts. Students know the ecological demands of bryophytes. Students have skills to recognize and determine the moss species, based on the knowledge obtained, as well on the mosses guide book. Students are able to explain the functions of a bryophyte in connection to the anatomical structure. Students have competence to analyse the growing conditions of the mosses and liverworts and to describe the forest site types and the quality of environment according to present bryophyte species.
