Course abstract

Study course examines the concept of biodiversity and its levels. Students obtain knowledge about development of forest vegetation in Latvia after ice-age. The forest vegetation - boreal coniferous, European broad - leaved, Eurosibirian black-alder forests and structural elements, natural disturances and specific species associated with biodiversity are analysed. The protection of forest habitats and species is inspected.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge - to characterize the Latvia's forest biodiversity and its levels,groups of forest vegetation - biodiversity and natural disturbances associated with them;
skills - to define,describe and recognize structural elements and specific species important for biodiversity;
competence - to analize, argue and recommend the possibilities to maintain and to manage biodiversity in different forest habitats.
