Course abstract

Students are introduced with the economic significance of non-traditional farm animals: rabbits, fur animals and deer. Course focuses on animal production and its quality assessment criteria. Students will be provided with information about rabbit, fur animal and deer breeding methods, feeding principles and appropriate housing technologies. There will be evaluated the effect of genetic, physiological and environmental factors on animal productivity and production quality. Recording data will be analysed and the results will be compared with the aims of animal breeding programs. During the course, the master students visit rabbit, fur and deer breeding farms. During visits students evaluate the animal feeding and housing conditions, animal quality and farming methods.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students will gain:
• knowledge about Latvian non-traditional livestock biological characteristics, species-specific production obtaining principles, feeding and housing technologies, the parameters for characterizing quality of production, the organization of animal breeding and its correspondence with the animal breeding program. Participation in lectures and seminars. Evaluation of individually prepared presentations.
• skills to evaluate for rabbit, fur animal and deer breeding, available breed crossing and blood line suitability for Latvian conditions. Ability to justify feeding and housing technology choices and analyse achieved breeding results. • competence to choose breeds, crosses and blood lines suitable for Latvian conditions. Feeding and housing technologies. Perform analysis of obtained breeding results. Competence to take part in development of new breeding programs. Carry independent scientific studies and analyse scientific and professional literature. Evaluation of the results of the analysis of information obtained during the seminars and farms and participation in discussions.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Regular attendance to lectures. Positive evaluation in seminars and exam.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

During course are planned 3 seminars. For seminar each student choses specific topic and prepares a presentation on it.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

In study course individually prepared presentations is publicly defended. Evaluation in exam is calculated from evaluation on seminar presentations (50%) and evaluation in exam test (50%).
