During the study course students get acquainted with the animal species used for milk acquisition in Latvia. Learn about dairy cow and goat breeding, housing and feeding technologies and behavioral patterns. Evaluate genetic, physiological and environmental factor effect on milk productivity and quality of different age and breed dairy cows and goats. Analyze the costs of milk production and explain the basic principles of their formation.
Students will gain:
• Knowledge about animal species used for milk production in Latvia, about breeding, housing and feeding technologies and their behavioral pattern, about the costs of milk production and its reduction potential.
• Skills to choose the breeds of cows and goats that are most suitable for the milk production. Justify the choice of feeding and housing technologies in dairy farms, analyze the costs of milk production and realize cost reduction opportunities.
• Competence to choose cow and goat breeds suitable for current economic situation, housing and feeding technology. Carry independent scientific studies, study and analyze scientific and professional literature.
