Course abstract
History and actual tasks of pedigree seed multiplication. Cultivar as the main object of pedigree seed multiplication, different types of cultivars. Reasons of seed quality and cultivar deterioration. Main tasks of seed multiplication production branch. Seed categories and seed multiplicati schemes (OECD schemes). Concept of breeder seed production. Normative acts for pedigree seed multiplication.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Master students acquire deeper knowledge on cultivar as the main object of pedigree seed production, on different cultivar types, their characteristics, on reasons of seed quality and cultivar deterioration, on main tasks of pedigree seed production and organization in Latvia, Europe and the world.
Master students are skilled to associate reasons of cultivars’ deterioration with the seed categories; they comprehend essence of breeder seed production. Master students distinguish cultivars, they are skilled to evaluate seed quality and to choose suitable for specific conditions cultivar, as well as to use seed certificates, results of DUS and VCU tests, and normative acts in pedigree seed production.
Master students are competent to manage pedigree seed production or inspection, to advice or to carry out research in this field, as well as to study and discuss scientific or other literature on included topics.
