Course abstract

The study course gives knowledge about geological processes, mineral and rock formation and their properties, genesis of main relief forms of Latvia and their importance in landscape formation, geological research methods. The goal of study course is to get knowledge about variety of minerals and rocks, geological processes and relief, and ability to use and incorporate achieved knowledge in common landscape planning.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Knowledge about geological structure, geological processes and relief significance in natural landscape formation.
• Skills - identify type of sediments and rocks. Usage fo geological borehole data and other geological information, for example, geological and topographical maps, construct geological sections, carry out their interpretation, define genesis of rocks and sediments, distribution of geological processes potential risk zones, establishing probable sediments of water horizons. Different relief forms distribution, recognize ongoing geological processes in nature.
• Competence - use of study site relief and geological structure in landscape planning, not promote evolution of geological processes and use natural rock material.
