Course abstract

The goal of the course is to provide knowledge in international economics: theory and policy. It provides an understanding of why nations trade in goods, services, labour, and capital; implications of government interventions for foreign trade.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge – master students obtain knowledge on the role of international economics nowadays, its theories, foreign trade policies and the economics of foreign trade, international economic processes and trends in Latvia as a small country with a very open economy. Skills – master students are able to use their knowledge in making economic decisions at levels of both households and enterprises and national institutions, taking into consideration the risks that are caused by the international context of these decisions and preventing possible mistakes by taking into account experiences of other countries. Competence – master students gain knowledge and skills to promote increases in welfare in Latvia, using the advantages that are specific to a small country with a very open economy which is a member country of the European Union – the world’s largest free trade bloc.
