Course abstract

The goal of the course is to gain extensive knowledge on the insurance market and the risks related to it. During the course, students analyse the legislation regulating insurance and study the types of insurance offered in the insurance market. In the course, the markets and risks of life insurance and business insurance are extensively analysed.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge – master students gain knowledge on the operation of life and nonlife insurance companies and private pension funds in the territory of Latvia, profound knowledge on analysing the financial performance of an insurance company and the insurance industry and on insurance products, and knowledge on the role of reinsurance in the stability of insurance market. Skills – master students are able to independently make a financial analysis and an assessment of an insurance company, identify and assess the existing and new insurance products, and estimate the financial gains from long-term life insurance and accumulated pensions. Competence – master students gain profound knowledge on and skills in assessing the financial performance of insurance companies and are competent in the assortment of insurance services. They obtain knowledge on the operation of private pension funds in Latvia and the provision and stability of a long-term process of reinsurance and insurance.
