Course abstract

The aim of the course is to provide the highest level of theoretical knowledge in the field of veterinary surgery science issues.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge of the ongoing, surgically related pathological processes in the animals body. As well as the use of the latest, scientifically based methods in the treatment of these pathological processes.
Skills in clinical examination of animals, using the latest visual diagnostic and laboratory examination methods in diagnosis and interpretation of pathological processes.
Competence in assessing various surgical diseases and prescribing appropriate treatment, as well as performing recommended preventive measures in case of a specific disease. Evaluation – Promotion Exam.

Course Content(Calendar)

A doctoral student with independent study of scientific literature must learn about:
1. Topical issues of veterinary surgery research in the world and in Latvia.
2. Traumatology. Recent methods and research in the prevention and treatment of various tissue lesions.
3. Research of surgical diseases of various animal organs.
4. To find out the latest information in the sub-sectors of veterinary surgery: Dentistry, Andrology, Orthopedics, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology.
5. Animal models, their development and application in surgical disease research
6. Recent research on surgical infection, its prevention and possible treatment.

7. Linking the sub-branch with other scientific branches in the specific chosen topic of the doctoral thesis.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Individual studies under the guidance of a lecturer acquiring a doctoral program in Veterinary Surgery, which ends with a successful passing of the doctoral examination. 2 weeks before the exam, doctoral student must submit an application to the Study Center.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The doctoral student independently studies scientific literature on the topics specified in the study course plan and prepares for the promotion exam.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Passed Promotion Exam at the approved commission.
The exam is done by choosing a ticket (with at least 2 questions) and orally.
