Course abstract

In the 2nd part of the study course the knowledge are acquired promoting for skills of rational choice of type of structural system and appropriate design. The tutorials are devoted to the training of skills for design of structural elements and joints of timber structures (mechanically jointed beams, built-up columns, trusses, three hinged arches and frames). General characterisation of structural plastics including specifics of their mechanical properties, and overview on plastic structures (tents, pneumatic structures) is delivered in some lectures.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge and understanding on types of timber structures and behaviour under loads, about hinged and stiff joints between elements, evaluation of bearing capacity and preconditions for design, ensuring of sustainable service of timber structures. Skills: to do good choice for design model of structure, to perform the static analysis for real load combinations, to perform the dimensioning of sections of elements and design of joints. Competence: to demonstrate an ability to put in use the knowledge and skills for good choice of type of bearing structure (girder, truss, portal frame, arch or some space structure) regarding the span to be covered, loads to be transferred and service conditions to be sustained.
