Course abstract

To master the systematics of woody plants – to get to know the taxa of woody plants, their morphology, biology and ecology. To understand the link between arboraceous plants and environment, their esthetic and social significance, and master the use of arboraceous plants in landscape planning, management and protection.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge about the morphology, biology, and ecology of the wild and major introduced woody plant taxa of Latvia and their significance in the ecosystems of Latvian forests, their migration and floristic status in the flora and vegetation of Latvia. Skills to analyze the morphological features of the woody plants, to evaluate their taxonomic value and to identify taxa. Competence to evaluate and explain the expressions of the interaction of woody plant taxa and the environment, to discuss the suitability of the taxon to the particular ecological conditions, if necessary, to justify its replacement.
