Course abstract

The purpose of the object is to study the parts of buildings and design, including details of multi-storey residential, public and industrial buildings, classification, the structure of the building and the general requirements. The main building structures: foundations, walls, divisions, floors, partitions, stairs, roofs, windows, doors and other concepts of design of structural building elements are acquired both in theory and during the design of the course project. The basic principles for the design of multi-storey residential, public buildings are acquired: children's institutions, schools, cinemas and sports structures, as well as industrial buildings

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: Knows the basics, definitions, solutions of sustainable development of buildings.
Skills: Able to identify and characterise sustainable solutions of the building. Knows how to apply construction terminology. Ensure the assessment of sustainable solutions. To develop an appropriate solution technically – economic justification. Knows how to navigate the identification, suitability and cost of innovative sustainable construction solutions. Knows the essential requirements for public and industrial buildings.
Competence: Able to develop BREEAM or analogous system pre-assessment for construction or project. Is able to perform technically – economic evaluation of solutions.

7. Review and evaluation of BREEAM criteria for freely selected sites. (4h)
8. Presentation of BREEAM object evaluations. Industry news (4h)

Requirements for awarding credit points

The evaluation of study results is based on the sustainability presentation developed and defended by the student. The number of delayed classes does not exceed 20%.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The student develops the research in the form of a presentation.
Independent work
1. To choose and survey a freely chosen building, program development.
2. Use of energy in the building
3. Water solutions in the building
4. Materials used
5. Waste management at the facility
6. Land use and ecology
7. Pollution
8. Transport solutions
9. Management
10. Presentation design, printing and brooching.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment of the presentation depends on the volume and complexity of the freely chosen object, where the aim is to cover as many BREEAM sustainable construction valuation system rating points as possible. Rating assign if presentation is presented in MS Project or an alternate presentation format. A higher rating granted if the assessment of each point covers the identification of technical solutions, the calculation of costs and the analysis of significance. The student is able to demonstrate the acquired knowledge, skills and competence by presenting the independently developed presentation.
