Course abstract

A general introduction to the aims and content of landscape architecture and planning, the idea of land-use planning and design. Meaning of term landscape in ecology, geography and other fields of science. Man perception and landscape. Factors determining visual character and development of landscape. Role of human in creation of landscape. Landscape ecology. Usage of landscape ecology principles in landscape planning and architecture. Ecological building. Planning of sustainable landscape development. Landscape inventory.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After completing the course student will have:
• knowledge of the theory practical use of landscape ecology, basic principles of sustainable landscape planning; knowledge of terminology used in landscape ecology;
• skills to assess the role and place of human and nature elements in establishment of social, aesthetic, ecological and functional qualities of landscape; skills to elaborate development of definite landscape;
• competence to study place conditions before starting the design of definite territory; to aggregate information about nature and human impact to the landscape; competences to work according to the Latvia legislative documentation.
