Course abstract

The aim of the subject is to give knowledge about the development periods and styles of architecture and garden art, starting from 20th century till now days, including the most notable objects from Europe, Asia, America and Latvia. A special attention is drawn to the most notable creations of architects and landscape architects, modern parks, the garden and outdoor space development of the 20th century and now days. The subject of the study process consists of lectures and independently prepared reports in workshops.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

The outcome of the study course:
• knowledge about the development and structure of architecture and garden art objects of the 20th century and nowadays, the newest materials and technical achievements, values of art,
• skills to recognize styles of architecture and gardens, the most notable creators and objects,
• ability to characterize and evaluate nowadays architecture, city-building and landscape achievements and opportunities.

1 Definition of area visual quality and landscape potential.
2 Socio-economic factors of territorial development forecast.
3 SWOT analysis and design program. Brownfield impact on climate change.
4 Discussion about first variant of landscape development concept. Spatial planning functional base and zoning.
5 Brownfields area revitalization and remediation, reducing their pollution and adapting new features.
6 The basic idea of landscape compositions by selecting the view points and view directions.
7 Variations of use and modification of relief.
8 Existing or newly water reservoirs and their environmental impact assessment.
9 Spatial overgrowth assessment and proposals.
10 Agricultural area use forecasts.
11 Proposals for production or public area planning.
12 Modeling of tourism and recreation possibilities.
13 Development of land use master plan.
14 Plan detailing and improvement element specifications.
15 Greenery plan and dendrological specifications.
16 Graphic material of project presentation, evaluation and discussion.
