Course abstract

The aim of the course - to acquire the following topics: building classification, constructive structure. The main building materials and construction. Compositions techniques, building functional solution design regulations. Tectonic, artistic and economic coherence. Building types. The aim of the subject is to study the parts of the buildings and their design, including information on residential and public buildings, their classification, constructive structures and general requirements. The main building of the design: the foundations, walls, floors, stairs, roofs, windows, doors and other constructive elements of design of the building. Study the basic principles of residential buildings, public buildings, offices, schools, cinemas and sports buildings design. In study course are included topics about climate changes in rural areas.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Knowledge - architectural volume designing. Skills to choose right constructive and compositional solution. Knowledge: design of residential and public buildings. Building functional components and sub-assemblies technological solutions.
• Skills: to make the necessary calculations, develop construction drawings, the Latvian and other laws. Develop appropriate documentation with the appropriate detail in any civil design stage. Navigate the material and solutions portfolio, their rational use, costs and other economic and technical characteristics.
• Competence: to be able to develop residential and public building design and technical design of architecture. To be able to carry out construction projects for the evaluation, inspection and approving in State and local government institutions.

1 Discussion of project tasks for private house building with total area of 250 to 300 m2
2 Research of current situation.
3 Selection and research of proper literature.
4 CO2 emissions from buildings. Energy efficiency activity role in climate change mitigation.
5 Energy efficiency activities - building location in relation to the main winds in territory, terrain, forests, etc.; building insulation, window placement.
6 Functional sketch of the building placement. The building dimension sketch in a particular environment.
7 Functional solution of building development. Buildings compositional solutions.
8 Functional and compositional ideas acceptance.
9 Passive, zero-energy and plus-energy buildings. Eco-buildings. Innovative materials for raising building energy efficiency.
10 Facade composition detailing. Building facades and plans graphic design.
11 Design or covering constructions.
12 Component modelling (windows, doors).
13 Plan of site layout.
14 Improvement of territory development.
15 Staircase construction.
16 Project graphical formation and hand-in.
