Students get familiar with diversity of horticultural plants, their ecological requirements, growing aspects, propagation methods and the growing of plants, and the preconditions for quality production. In laboratory and practical works, students acquire an in-depth understanding of horticultural plants and practical skills in their propagation, growing, caring and quality assessment.
1. Students know the classification of horticultural plants, methods of their propagation, plant growing technology and organisation - test 1
2. Students know the diversity and ecological requirements of horticultural plants, main aspects of garden establishment, care, and harvesting – test 2
3. Students are able to recognise horticultural plants, perform major work operations in the propagation, planting, caring, harvesting and crop quality assessment - laboratories and practical works
5. Students are competent to study and collect information independently, to prepare presentations and to justify their decisions and views – individual work
I Introduction (2 h)
1. Place of horticulture in the agricultural production system, its economic importance, its spotlight and perspective. The role of fruits and vegetables in human nutrition - 1 h
2. Classification and systematics of the horticultural plants – 1 h
II Propagation of the horticultural plants (8 h)
3. Methods of generative and vegetative propagation of the horticultural plants - 1 h.
4. Propagation of annual and perennial horticultural plants with seeds — 1 h
5. Methods of vegetative propagation of horticultural plants by rooting- 1 h
6. Propagating of the horticultural plants by grafting – 3 h
7. Types of plant production: bare-roots plants, plants with closed root system. The technological process of plant production. Types of nurseries. Structure of nursery farms, selection of propagation material, regulations regarding propagation material of horticultural plants – 1 h.

III Growing of horticultural crops (22 h)
8. Diversity of horticultural plants – 2 h
9. Characteristics of horticultural plant vegetation and dormancy periods, their effects on production and winter hardiness. Yield formation and care of yield of fruit plants. Annual and bi-annual production - 1 h
10. Quality analysis of fruits and berries. Conditions for high quality yield, Fruit cultivars – 3 h
11. Conditions for selection of garden sites, garden systems and installation technological processes -1 h
12. Maintenance of soil and plants in the garden, special features of crown construction, depending on the species, rootstock, age of plants and type of garden - 4 h
13. Harvesting and storage of the horticultural crops - 1 h.
14. Vegetable diversity, their morphological and biological characteristics and ecological requirements – 2 h
15. Diversity of ornamental plants -2 h
16. Characteristics of cultivation and marketing of ornamental nursery plants – 1 h
17. Seminar “Production of vegetables/ornamentals under open-field and greenhouse conditions” – 4 h
Test 2. Growing of the horticultural plants
Test with a mark.
Students who have successfully passed all tests, have developed and got credited practical and laboratory works and have successfully presented their Individual work can pass the Test.
Individual work – review on the selected vegetable/ornamental plant growing. It consists of an overview of professional and scientific literature about all main aspects of growing and use of the chosen crops. The work shall be presented to the student group at the seminar.
The final evaluation shall be the average mark from the tests written during the semester and the individual job marks.
The laboratory, practical and individual works shall be evaluated in accordance with the procedures for assessment specified in the laboratory, practical and individual works tasks.
