Vete4022 [GVET4022] Large Animal Surgery II
Large animal surgery II deals with of horses a concise, practical and systematic review to etiology and pathogenesis, diagnostic and diferentialdiagnostic properties of the diseases and they treatment in all parts and tissues of large animal body.
Knowledge: Horse diseases in surgical diagnosis, theoretical and practical knowledge of operations and postoperative care of animals – practical works.
Skills: to analyze each case individually before clinical investigation of the animal. Investigation of animal and clinical diagnosis. Skills to assess the future of the animal treatment – practical works.
Competency: combine the knowledge and skills, and further use in veterinary practice. Interpret the results of clinical cases – practical works.
1. Introductory lecture in the horse surgery - Basic principles of diagnosis and treatment of horse surgical diseases. Safe horses fixation. Horse anesthesia (local, general; standing horse anesthesia). Bleeding. Infection. Hypergranulation . Wound Treatment Principles. Wound cosmetic suturing. Lectures - 2h. Practical work - 2h.
2. Head region surgery diseases - Dental pathologies (teeth, their anatomy, examination). Change in milk teeth, age determination by the teeth. The most common dental pathologies, their treatment. Ophthalmology (Injury). Lectures - 2h. Practical work - 2h.
3. Neck region surgery diseases - Phlebitis. Wobbler syndrome. Laryngeal pathologies (Hemiplagiya, Dorsal displacement of the soft palate, Epiglottic entrapment. Lectures - 2h. Practical work - 2h.
4. Breast region surgical diseases - Pneumothorax. Haemothorax. Fracture of the rib. Osteomyelitis. Lectures - 2h. Practical work - 1h.
5. Spine and belt region surgical diseases - Kissing spines. Muscle inflammation. Lectures - 2h. Practical work - 1h.
6. Abdominal region surgical diseases - Abscesses. Hernias. Colline Surgery. Bladder rupture. Postoperative complications. Lectures - 2h. Practical work - 2h.
7. Andrology - Castaration. Testicular torsio. Cryptorchid. Preputial edema. Penis contusion, hematoma, paralysis. Lectures - 2h. Practical work - 2h.
8. Lameness - Lameness diagnostics. Flexion tests. Nerve blocks. X-ray examination. Ultrasonography. The general principles of the treatment of lameness. Bone fractures. OSD Arthritis. Tendonitis. Myoglobinuria. Enthisiophit. Ring bone. Suspensory ligament desmitis. Stringhalt. Bone spavin. Contractures.Lectures - 2h. Practical work - 2h.
Before performing each surgical operation and surgical manipulations, the surgical technique must be answered orally. All practical work hours have been attended. The number of not attended lectures does not exceed 10% of the total number of lectures. Successfully passed exam ( written or verbal).
Literature studies on surgical diseases of livestock, operations, analysis of practical results. Optional option to participate in a horse clinic incoming horses investigation, surgical operation and manipulation of the performance and post-operative care (under the supervision of a leading veterinarian)
SStudents' knowledge and skills are assessed in accordance with the procedures specified in the tasks of the practical works.
In order to obtain the final grade of the study course "passed", the student must demonstrate his knowledge and skills in practical works.
The examination of the study course is assessed in accordance with the 10 point system scale criteria indicated in the LBTU Study Regulations.
