Course abstract

During studies students are got acquainted with the Latvian and European Union legislative process. The types of legislation in Latvia and European Union. The most important legislative requirements in the field of the control and eradication of the infectious diseases of animals, the requirements for the identification and registration of animals, the process of the registration (authorisation) of veterinary medicines, rules for the distribution and use of them as well as relevant documentation, the types, quality and safety rules of animal feed, the principles of action with animal by-products and waste management in veterinary medical practice institutions.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge - understanding and use of legislation related to the veterinary medicine, elements of the official control, the rights, obligations, responsibilities of practising veterinarian - 5 tests.
Skills to find and apply the corresponding Latvian or European Union legislative norms according to the performed veterinary activity - practical works.
Competence to know and to apply in a right way the veterinary legislation in force doing veterinary practise, to work in the competent authority and perform official obligations, to work in other fields related to the keeping and transporting animals, animal trade; involved in production, evaluation, distribution, usage of medication, distribution and usage of animal feed, handling of animal by-products.

2. Legislative system in Latvia. Types of laws in Latvia. Veterinary Medicine Law. 4 h
3. European Union, its structure and main institutions. The legislative process in European Union. Development of legislation and types of law in the European Union. 4 h
4. Test. Companion animal identification and registration. 3 h
5. Farm animal (herd) marking/identification and registration 3 h
6. Non-commercial movement of companion animals. 3 h
7. Competitions, markets, auctions, exhibitions with animal participation. 2 h
8. Test. Monitoring of animal infectious diseases. 4 h
9. The national monitoring programs and plans of animal infectious diseases. 3 h
10. Legislation on animal feed. 4 h
11. Test. Types of veterinary practices institution. 3 h
12. Medication in veterinary practices. 4 h
13. Test. Waste, management of it in veterinary practices. 3 h
14. Animal by-products. 4 h
15. Test. Related areas of Veterinary Science - institutes, laboratories, drug research. 3 h

Requirements for awarding credit points

Successfully completed five tests.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Independent acquaintance with normative acts - follows the tasks specified in the practical works.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Study course tests are evaluated in accordance with the criteria of the 10 point system scale indicated in the LLU Study Regulations.
To get the final grade of the study course "passed", all tests must be evaluated with a successful grade. In order to get a successful grade in test, students have to specify at least 65% of the correct answers.
