VeteB027 [GVETB027] Diseases of Miscellaneous Animals I
10th semester of 5th course. Diseases of bees are the special subject in the curriculum of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. During the course students must study anatomy and biology of bees, veterinary hygienic measures taken at apiary, diagnostics and disease control, examination of bee-keeping products and their hygienic treatment in cases of bee diseases. The subject deals with anatomical and physiological peculiarities of poultry basic issues of its nutrition, management and tending on various types of farms – small, medium and large.
Knowledge of the aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis, control and prophylaxis of the common diseases that occur in the poultry and honey bees (two tests);
Skills to follow correct diagnostic procedures and to use appropriate diagnostic methods (practical class);
Competence to minimise the risks in small animal husbandry and nutrition to prevention and prophylaxis of diseases (practical class).

2. Bacterial diseases of honey bee (2 hours). P.C. Anatomy of the bees (2 hours).
3. Viral diseases of honey bee (2 hours). P.C. Bee development, bee work cycle (2 hours).
4. Parasitic diseases of honey bee (2 hours). P.C. Practical training in apiary (practice trips): beekeeping equipment, products, diagnosis of bee diseases and treatment. (6 hours).
5. Non-communicable diseases of honey bee (2 hours). P.C. Diagnosis of bee diseases (2 hours).

6. Non-communicable diseases of poultry (2 hours). P.C. Anatomy and physiology of poultry (3 hours).
7. Poultry viral diseases (2 hours). P.C. Poultry housing, care, catering conditions (3 hours).
8. Poultry bacterial diseases (2 hours). P.C. Observation and analysis of wildlife physiology and behaviour, methods of application of medicines (3 hours).
9. Parasitic diseases of poultry (2 hours). P.C. Non-infectious bird diseases and infectious diseases (3 hours).
10. Parasitic diseases of poultry (2 hours). P.C. Poultry parasites (3 hours).
Credit points can be obtained if all practical work has been completed, student has participated in practice trips organized by lecturer and passed two tests in 1) bee diseases and 2) poultry diseases.
Working out missed practical classes should be coordinated with the teaching staff.
Studies of scientific articles given by teaching staff in honey bee and poultry diseases.
Participation in practice trips is mandatory.
At the end of each subject course (diseases of poultry and honey bee), the student has to pass two tests and receive a mark. At least 70 % of questions must be answered correctly.
