Course abstract

Study course Radiology I instructs ionizing radiation usage in a veterinary medicine and different diagnostic imaging machine structure and equipment usage.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledges: on ionizing radiation, of basic principles and knowledge’s of x-ray machines, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography. Assessment – three tests.
Skills: first day skills to work with X-ray machine, ultrasonography, computed tomography; apply dosimeters in practical work; analyze radiograms. Assessment – at practical works.
Competence: to understand the issues of radiation safety, to choose the diagnostic method. Assessment at three tests and practical works.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Introduction. History. Ionizing radiation – types, source, detection, application. Radiation units, dosage. X-ray beam usage in medicine/veterinary medicine. Ionization impact to human and animal body, dosimetry and values. Radiation safety – 6 h lectures, 8 h laboratory works. One test.
2. Digital radiography, basic concept of making radiograph film blackness and opacity, artefacts. Invasive radiology – angiography, fluoroscopy, introduction of radiotherapy. Computed tomography – introduction, detector system, reconstructions, parameters, artefacts, position. Magnetic resonance – basic principles. Contrast media –
5 h lectures, 8 h laboratory works. One test.
3. Ultrasonography – introduction, ultrasound, reconstructions. Small animal, equine and large animal ultrasonography – 5 h lectures, 8 h laboratory works. One test.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Successfully completed three tests.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students should read scientific papers which is given by lecturer.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Student skills are assessed in accordance with the procedures specified in the tasks of the practical work.
The study course tests are evaluated in accordance with the criteria of the 10 point system scale indicated in the LLU Study Regulations.
To pass the study course all tests should be successfully completed.
