Course abstract

During the course, students gain an understanding of the nature of quality, its necessity and importance, the most common quality systems and their practical implementation, standardization and conformity assessment in Latvia and the European Union. Graduates are introduced to the stages of implementation of the quality management system, maintenance and improvement processes and preparation of documentation, with quality management tools and factors determining their choice, as well as the latest developments in quality management.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knows and understands quality concepts, quality systems, standards, processes. Knowledge and understanding of quality conditions in companies and organizations and the application of quality systems and methods in companies, organizations and projects - independent work, practical tasks, group work, presentation.
Able to independently apply quality management standards and processes to the project. Able to develop project quality plans using quality management standards and techniques. Able to plan quality management and assignments responsibly. Able to engage in teamwork, express and argue their thoughts. Able to present the developed quality management plans - group work, individual work, presentation.
Ability to independently identify, formulate and analyze quality management problems in the project, apply quality management processes in the organization. Able to initiate problem solving using quality management standards and methods - practical work, group work.

Lecture topics:
1. The concept of quality.
2. Nature of quality management system, basic concepts of quality.
3. Quality management in organizations and projects.
4. Standards. Basic principles of standards development, their application.
5. ISO standards group. Breakdown of ISO standards.
6. Types of international quality standards.
7. Quality management system costs.
8. The quality management system implementation, monitoring and control mechanism.
9. Documentation of quality management system, its development process.
Quality Manual.
10. Internal audit its planning and organization.
11. The concept of excellence in quality management.
12. CAF - Self-Assessment System.
13. Certification of quality management systems.
14. Quality management system quality management.

List of practical work:
1. Development of quality awareness and connection of the basic principles to the present (individual work and group discussion, 1 h).
2. Development and Advantages of Total Quality Management (TQM). (discussion, presentation in groups 2h.)
3. Series and structure of ISO standards. ISO standard requirements in the relevant industry. (group work, discussion, presentation, individual work 2h.)
4. Standardization. Standardization levels, structure. (presentation, group work, individual work 3 hrs.)
5. Quality management system implementation process in Latvia. Experiences, problems and solutions. (discussions, work in the audience 1st.)
6. Quality management system documentation, its development process. Quality Manual. (independent work, presentation 2 h.)
7. Quality management tools and their selection criteria. (work in groups practically 1st.)

Requirements for awarding credit points

Formal test with a grade.
Grade is based on a cumulative assessment of the progress made during the semester:
- the independent work has been submitted and presented in due time;
- group work in seminars;
All independent and practical work and tests must be assessed with at least 4 points.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

- Independent literature studies on topics (materials are available in the e-study environment), preparations for workshops;
- Development, presentation and defence of homeworks.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Formal test with a grade based on a cumulative assessment (100% system):
-independent work - 40%;
- presentation - 40%;
- practical and group work - 20%.
All works must be completed, submitted and presented in due time.
Independent work is evaluated by the quality of the task fulfillment requirements set by the lecturer.
