Course abstract

The course provides master students with an in-depth knowledge of and skills in establishing, managing and planning a logistics system as well as controlling it at an enterprise. Master students build up an in-depth understanding of how to apply the logistics audit method as well as competence in the matters pertaining to the need, specifics and systems of logistics for enterprises of various industries.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Students will be able to: demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the nature of logistics and its role in the national economy, the latest trends in logistics in Latvia and in the world - independent work, a case study
2. Demonstrate a conceptual knowledge and understanding of a macrologistics system - independent work, practical assignments
3. Demonstrate a specific knowledge and understanding of the types of logistics and economic and management mechanisms and instruments for a particular type of logistics - independent work, practical assignments, a test
4. Independently determine the basic types of logistics and use economic and management mechanisms and instruments for a particular type of logistics for enterprises by applying the analytical approach - practical assignments, group work, a test
5. Analyse endogenous and exogenous factors for a macrologistics system - discussions in classes, a case study
6. Find, critically assess and creatively use information for doing the assignments given and solving problems - practical group assignments, a case study
7. Effectively work in a team, delegate and coordinate the fulfilment of responsibilities, assume responsibility for the results of the group work - case study
8. Present and explain to others the results of the work – presentation
9. Independently create and develop a system of rational and effective logistics management at an enterprise - test, independent work

10. Independently integrate the acquired knowledge to analyse a macrologistics system - independent work

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Concept of Logistics, definitions and historical development. Factors of development (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment – 1 hour)
2. Logistics topicalities in Latvia and global. Macro logistic systems (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment – 1 hour)
3. Logistics targets, tasks and role in business activities. Main Logistics Costs. (lecture – 2 hours)
4. Inbound Logistics. Supplier selection – case study (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment – 2 hours)
5. Operations Logistics (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment – 1 hour)
6. Outbound Logistics. Outbound Logistics – case study (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment – 2 hours)
7. Service Logistics. (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment – 1 hour)
8. Economic and management mechanisms and tools for providing of logistics activities (lecture – 1 hour)
9. Logistics place in a company structure. Organization and management of logistics processes in the company – case study (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment – 2 hours)
10. Audit of Logistics system (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment – 1 hour)
11. The test ( 1 hour)

12. Logistics’ need, role, specifics and systems different industries (lecture – 1 hour)

Requirements for awarding credit points

Formal test with a mark. The Mark consist of:
• Independent work, a presentation (25%)
• Practical assignments (15%)
• Group work, a case study, a presentation (30%)
• Test - Economic and management mechanisms and instruments for the types of logistics (30%)


10% are equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Independent work - Analysis of a macro logistics system – preparation and presentation.
Preparation and presentation of practical assignments, group assignment, case study.

Preparing for test.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

A formal test with a mark is an accumulative grade from the assessment of the results of a course.
