Course abstract

Students gain knowledge about the essence of entrepreneurship and its basic principles. Knows the phases of the company`s life cycle and their features. Gains an understanding of micro, small and medium business, its importance and economic situation in Latvia. After course, student understands what kind of entrepreneurship shapes are and also how to establish enterprise and its organization, business legal framework in the field catering and hotel The knowledge gained in the course will give students the knowledge, skills and competencies to start a business.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Students will be able to: demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the substance and concepts of entrepreneurship – practical assignments, test and examination.
2. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the principles, legal aspects and problems of entrepreneurship in Latvia – test, examination.
3. Generate and underpin a business idea and do activities to start up a business by using the theoretical knowledge and skills acquired – practical assignments, independent work.
4. Describe the environment for an enterprise and the factors affecting it – independent work and practical assignments.
5. Choose, describe and justify a location for a business – independent work and practical assignments.
6. Explain and reasonably discuss matters regarding the entrepreneurial environment and micro- and small enterprises as well as the most important phases of the enterprise life cycle - discussions during classes, an examination.
7. Independently use theory on entrepreneurship – test, an examination.
8. Participate in setting goals for an enterprise – practical assignments.
9. Responsibly organise and manage work at an enterprise – practical assignments.
10. Generally, explain and discuss the operation of an enterprise – discussions in classes.
11. Generally, substantiate and draw conclusions on entrepreneurship – related matters as well as come up with solutions – independent work and practical assignments.
12. Explain and present the research results to others – independent work and practical assignments.
13. Independently define and critically analyse entrepreneurship – related matters and opportunities – examination.
14. Justify the decisions made and, if necessary, do an additional analysis – tests, practical assignments.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Examination
The mark consists of:
• 15% practical assigments of all the topics.
• 15% independent work with a presentation.
• 15% test on the esence of business, basic concepts.
• 15% test on the legal basis of economic activity, forms of commercial activity, business legislation and planning.
• 40% examination – all the topics.

10% are equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale.

Preparings for examination.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The evaluation of the study course depends on the evaluation of tests, practical, permanent work and the exam.
