Course abstract

Students acquire knowledge and skills which are necessary for professional communication, assess their personal characteristics and psychological resources for career and professional development. During interviews with veterinarians, students get to know the specifics of veterinarians work and develop oral presentation skills by reporting interview results.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: able to describe basic concepts and research methods of applied psychology - quiz
Skills: able, using the acquired theoretical basics and skills, to discuss reasonably about their advantages and disadvantages in the chosen profession – 2nd to 4th homework;
able to analyze and improve his/her professional communication – 5th homework.
Competence: able to obtain, select, analyze and present information about the chosen profession independently – 1st homework

1. Basic concepts of applied psychology.
2. Research methods. Interview – 2 h
Quiz — Basic concepts and research methods of applied psychology
3. Personality: content and structure. Values – 2 h
4. Cognitive development of personality. Schemata.
5. Development and expression of self-schemata.
6. Self-esteem, locus of control and level of aspirations in professional communication – 2 h
7. Theories of motivation. The reasoned action approach – 2 h
8. Self-efficacy. Development of professional self-efficacy
9. Suitability for the profession. Vocational personalities.
10. Verbal and non-verbal communication. Emotional intelligence.
11. Expressions of emotion in language and behavior. Alexithymia – 2 h
12. Professional communication in veterinary practice.
13. Calgary-Cambridge guidelines for the communication process in health care – 2 h
14. Losses, crises, sadness and mourning in veterinary practice – 2 h
15. Psychological portraits of veterinarians – 2 h

Requirements for awarding credit points

A formal test by summing up a student‘s performance during a semester without an additional examination or test at the end of a study course.
All tests and homework must be credited.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The 1st Homework. Structured interview with a veterinarian (the summary of the interview shall be submitted electronically and presented in the group of students at the end of the course)
The 2nd Homework. Investigation and describing of own self-esteem, locus of control and level of aspirations (up to 1 page, submitted electronically)
3rd homework. Self-assessment of suitability for the profession. (up to 1 page, submitted electronically)
The 4th Homework. Self-assessment of emotional intelligence (up to 1 page, submitted electronically)
The 5th Homework. SWOT Analysis of the Calgary-Cambridge Guidelines (up to 1 page, submitted electronically)

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Homework and quizzes are evaluated in accordance with the assessment procedure specified in the homework or quiz.
Each homework and quiz is evaluated in a 10-point grading system, where 10 is the maximum, and 4 is the pass mark.
The formal test grade is calculated as the average of the mark of the 1st homework and the average mark of the semester, which is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the marks of the quizzes and homework taken in the study course.
