Course abstract

The aim of course is to provide set of practical skills of casting and forging in machinery engineering; processing types and products; Welding process and equipment for electrical, gas and pressure welding, technology and materials: theory of material cutting process; metal cutting machinery, equipment, tools and technology.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge to provide a set of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in casting production technology. Assessment - test.
Skills in part pressure machining and production; blank heating and forging technology; welding process, equipment and types. Assessment - test and laboratory work reports.

Competences to manage work processes with metalworking machines, devices, tools and technological processes. Assessment of independent work.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Casting production. General information on casting production. The role of castings in mechanical engineering - 2h.
2. Production of castings in molds. Forming materials, equipment and technology - 2h.
3. The latest types of casting production: casing molds, fusible molds, metal molds and die casting - 2h.
4. Theoretical bases of pressure treatment. Plastic deformation, formation of rigging - 1h. Recrystallization. Heating of workpieces for pressure treatment - 1h.
5. Undesirable effects in heating. Temperature range - 1h.
6. Technological processes of pressure processing: rolling, drawing and pressing - 2h.
7. Production of forgings. Free forging, tools, equipment and technology. Bulk stamping. Sheet stamping - 2h.
Test 1: (Production of castings and pressure treatment) - 1h.
8. Welding of metals. Basics of welded joints formation. Welded joints and seams - 2h.
9. Weldability of metals. Its criteria. Welding technology of different metals and peculiarities of seam formation - 2h.
10. Welding in shielding gases. MIG / MAG and TIG processes. Impact and choice of shielding gases. Welding wire - 3h.
11. Welding power sources, their external characteristics. Selection and use of power sources - 3h.
12. Gas welding process. Gas flame structure and types. Gas welding gases and technology - 2h.
Test 2: (Welding of metals) - 1h.
13. Plasma thermal cutting of metals - 2h.
14. Thermal cutting of metals with a laser beam - 2h.

15. Metal soldering, soldering materials and technology - 2h.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Test type - test. All tests work, laboratory work must be carried out. Delayed lectures shall not exceed 10% of the total.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Prepare for 2 tests - 38h.
1. homework. Describe the types of metal casting (submitted electronically or in writing.) – 17h;

2. homework. Describe the types of metal welding (submitted electronically or in writing.) - 17h.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Students who have successfully developed tests and laboratory works for this study course may not write the final test.
