Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to provide knowledge about spatial data processing and data exchange solutions. Students gain knowledge about the types of spatial data, the possibilities of storage, processing and dissemination. During the practical tasks students get acquainted with performing topological SQL queries in a database and building trivial solutions for the dissemination and presentation of spatial information.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge – students are able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basics of geoinformatics (2 laboratory tasks and exam).
Skills - are able to independently use theory and practical skills in the application, maintenance and development of complex geoinformatics solutions, being able to argue about geoinformatics’ solutions specifics (2 laboratory tasks and exam (incl. discussion)).
Competence - are able to independently analyze the problems of geoinformatics, integrating IT knowledge into geoinformatics solutions and justifying decisions for their application (2 laboratory tasks and exam (incl. discussion)).

6. Spatial features and data structures (3);
7. Download (WFS) and View (WMS) Services (3);
8. Interoperability (3);
9. Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (3);
10. Latvian Open Data Portal, Spatial Development Planning Information System (TAPIS), State Unified Geospatial Information Portal (Geoportal) and Geospatial Data Integrator (GDS);
11. Spatial information dissemination and presentation solutions (3).

Requirements for awarding credit points

Exam. Successful passing of the exam will give an opportunity to obtain credit points, but the evaluation of the study result additionally depends on the evaluations of 2 laboratory tasks. The study result is evaluated on a 10-point scale, where:
1. Independent laboratory task - Topological SQL queries -maximum 3 points or 30%;
2. Independent laboratory task - GIS server configuration and WMS/WFS representation in Front End - maximum 3 points or 30%;
3. Exam - maximum 4 points or 40%.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Literature research.

During the semester students should complete 2 practical work tasks, which must be completed independently.
1. independent laboratory work: Topological SQL queries;
2. independent laboratory work: GIS server configuration and WMS/WFS representation in Front End.
The tasks should be presented in DOC/PDF (at least 2 pages each) and submitted electronically in the e-learning (e-studiju) platform.
Oral presentation at the closing seminar and participation in a discussion.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

1. Task “Topological SQL queries” (maximum 3 points);
2. Task “GIS server configuration and WMS/WFS representation in Front End” (maximum 3 points);
3. Exam (maximum 4 points).
