Course abstract

Information about development of waterpower use in Latvia and Europe. Technology and engineering for waterpower use to produce electricity. Characteristics and analysis for small and middle-sized rivers hidrological regimes are given. Latvian rivers are evaluated for hydropower potential. Necessity to supply hydropower plant operation in natural run-off conditions. Technical engineering and technical supply of environmental flow are analized.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Knowledge to understand physical esence to use water power. To know calculating potential river waterpower.
• Skills to make select of hydropower equipment, turbines and ģenerators. To design chambers for turbines. To calculate necessary cross – section of derivation canal and draining duct.
•Competence to work out project of hydro power plant. To manage evaluation, expertation and coordination of projects.
