Course abstract

Tasks and importance of maintenance and proper management of land reclamation systems in agriculture. Ownership rights and duties concerning agricultural drainage systems. Measurements and observations for evaluation and control of the drainage performance. Operational problems of main drains, open channels and subsurface drainage and hydro technical structures. Monitoring and evaluating performance of drainage. Maintenance of polders and irrigation systems. Legislation in Latvia concerning land drainage and water management. Cadastre of land drainage systems.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After studying the course, the student:
• knows the legislation governing the maintenance of drainage systems and the current methods and techniques for maintaining the drainage systems and protecting the environment;
• knows how to choose appropriate solutions according to local conditions in order to ensure the functionality of the existing drainage systems, regulate the humidity regime and improve the quality of the environment;

• able to identify the causes and potential of an unfavorable moisture regime and design constructive measures that balance economic interests and environmental protection requirements.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Formal test with a grade in a system of a 10-point scale.
The practical works should be developed and defended successfully.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Calculations technical drawings and schemes started during practical works should develop and finish, a description and explanation of the results must be created.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The developed practical works are evaluated with the grade. The 8 poinst can be received at the maximum after the lecturer specified practical works are developed and defended sucsesfully. In addition, two points can be obtained in the knowledge test, as well as by developing additional works, in agreement with the lecturer. The final assessment consists of the sum of the assessment obtained in the practical tasks and the knowledge test.
