Course abstract

Students gain an understanding of the nature of entrepreneurship, micro, small and medium entrepreneurship, innovative entrepreneurship, and finance. Understands the importance of risk in business. Gains practical skills in starting and planning a business.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge
1. Knows the essence of business, understands concepts - practical work, test.
2. Able to show knowledge of business principles, legal norms, analyse the situation and solve problems in Latvia – test.
3. Can use the acquired theoretical bases and skills in professional activity, to perform the necessary activities for starting and developing business - practical, independent work.
Skills
4. Can evaluate the company's environment and the factors influencing it - practical and independent work.
5. Ability to explain and argue about the business environment, medium, small and micro entrepreneurship, as well as about the most important stages of the company's life cycle - discussions in classes, test.
6. Can use theoretical knowledge about entrepreneurship - test, exam.
7. Able to justify the company's goals - practical work.
8. Ability to rationally organize work in the company - practical work.
9. Can explain and discuss the company's activities - discussions in class.
10. Able to substantiate and express conclusions about entrepreneurship, offer solutions - independent and practical work.
Competence
11. Can explain and present the results of his / her work - independent and practical work.
12. Able to critically analyse business and justify decisions - test.

Full-time studies:

1. The essence of business (Lecture - 1 hour).
2. Business environment and its characteristics (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 1 hour).
3. Forms of business (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 1 hour).
4. Company life cycle (Lecture - 1 hour).
5. Micro, small, and medium business (Lecture - 1 hour).
6. Starting a business and founding a company (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 2 hours).
7. Reorganization of the company (Lecture - 1 hour).
8. Company insolvency and liquidation (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 1 hour).
9. Risk factor in business (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 1 hour).
10. Strategic business planning (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 2 hours).
11. Tactical and operational business planning (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 2 hours).
12. Basics of business planning (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 2 hours).
13. Sources of company financing (Lecture - 1 hour).
14. Investments and their role in business (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 1 hour).
15. Evaluation of the company's economic activity (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 2 hours).
16. Innovation entrepreneurship (Lecture - 1 hour; practical work - 1 hour).

Part-time studdies:
All topics specified for full-time studies are implemented but the number of contact hours is ½ of the specified number of hours

Requirements for awarding credit points

At the end of the study course a written final test. Passing the test is allowed for students who perform practical and independent work during the study course, have successfully written 2 tests during the semester.

Preparation of practical and independent work.
Preparing for tests.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Test with a mark
The rating consists of:
• 30% independent and practical work;
• 20% 1st test (themes 1-9);
• 20% 2nd test (topics 10-16);
• 30% final test.
10% corresponds to one point on the 10-point assessment scale
